OK, parents, what about a forum parent get together?? Day before I-Day? Middle of afternoon of I-Day? I thought it might be kind of fun to meet!

We will arrive in Annapolis Monday.......

We are coming from Colorado and we are flying in on the 30th, Tuesday and flying out on Thrusday the 2nd, without plebe.( I guess we will not be taking him home with us). We are staying at the Inn in Annapolis on Main and Church Circle. Getting together would be great.

Thinking about Virginia Beach?

Looking for some insight here.....we are thinking of spending a few days at Virginia Beach on the way to I-Day? Any thoughts? Plebe to be, little sis, and I are driving from Texas Panhandle (!), Dad, big bro and wife flying up; we meet in Baltimore Saturday before I-Day. Little sis wants some beach on the way up and the VA Beach-Norfolk area looks neat.

Still interested in meeting up with other forum parents on or near I-Day. I was thinking that maybe that afternoon? We are staying in DTA, so will be walking.

bit of advice

I-Day is emotionally, physically and mentally draining. And I am talking about the parents. You will be worn out and beat. The heat is oppressive and the rollercoaster you've been on is coming into the station. You will most likely not have the time or the energy for a big get together. But your mileage will vary.

xchefmike: Thanks for the advice. I had in mind a quick meeting, nothing extensive. Just to put a face to a name sort of thing.

I have no doubt that I-Day will be emotional. I can only imagine. I tear up now just thinking about DS going to USNA!

I just think it's funny that I live in Northern Virginia, about 45 minutes from Annapolis, and I'm sending my boy all the way to Colorado for the Air Force Academy. And there you are, in Colorado, sending your son here! Maybe we should have planned this better

Congratulations to your son. Annapolis is a beautiful area!

I can relate to the tearful moments. We could cry on one another's shoulders! Wouldn't that be fun? It is getting very real, isn't it?

Yes, it sounds like a great idea for parent bonding. I'm too busy to plan anything outlandish at this moment, but if you blow in my ear I'll follow you anywhere, along with my hubby, that is! :shake::thumb::shake:

On the Yard you can pick a monument for a meet and greet. Worden Bandshell will be behind the Alumni Association tent where they will be serving the picnic lunch. Zimmerman Bandshell by the Chapel (more shade). In front of Drydock where you can watch Plebes on the walkways (at a distance). There are many other landmarks you can use. Since you will all be at the Midstore anyway there is a sitting area near Navy Federal. Have Mom wear the white carnation it doesn't look right on dad's golf shirt.

If your Plebes-to-be want to meet, you'll need to do it before I-day (or after, I suppose). That morning, they won't be thinking of anything but being on time to report in.

If it's parents only, AF6872's ideas are great. One of my favorite spots on the Yard is by the seawall near the Trident light.

If your Plebes-to-be already have an older copy of Reef Points, now is the time to confiscate it! There is (at least in previous versions) a section on the history of the Yard and all of the monuments. It is a GREAT thing to have with you on I-day, and believe me, they will NEVER want to see it again!

What happens on I-Day, in terms of parent activity, in case of rain?

I-Day Rain Plan

I'm not privy to this year's foul weather plan, but there will be one. A few years back, in pouring rain and thunderstorms, the Alumni Association set up the Parents Welcome/lunch function in Halsey Field House. Worked just fine. The Welcome Tent is usually on Worden Field (parade ground) across from where the plebes enter Alumni Hall for processing.

As far as the Induction Ceremony goes, not sure how they will handle that. If it looks like rain, be prepared with foul weather gear.

For these kinds of things, they usually try to make the go/no go decision on venues the night before so they can try to get the word out.

Semper gumby applies. Great memories no matter what.

I know this has been discussed numerous times on the board. After the Oath of Office Ceremony you will meet your Plebe on Stribling Walk. They will be hot tired and hot, hot, hot. For some unknown reason devised by USNA White Works are like wearing a rubber suit in a sauna. Some will have tears, some will have a vacant over the horizon stare, some will look gut shot and some will say that coach xyz yelled longer and harder. and it was no big deal. All will need a place to sit and chill out. NAPS kids seem to find their own place and have a great time with each other and parents.

From information provided by our Parent's Club:

We brought a plastic table cloth for Plebe to sit on. Light and easy to fold and carry in a small bag. Grass stains on White Works are a No NO.

We brought a small soft sided portable cooler with a sandwich and drinks. Left it in the car and took the shuttle to retrieve it in the afternoon. They will be given the oppertunity to eat during he day but believe me they will not. They are so hyped the last thing they think about is food.

They will get the last order to form up and march by company into T-Court and Bancroft. Say goodbye and as parents walk out you will hear the strains of Christmas Carols from the upper windows of Bancroft

Lol, rain and thunderstorms in July. Good bye, SoCal!

Since AF mentioned the final meeting with the plebes on Stribling Walk I was sondering: how do they signal the end?

They are told to form up under company banner??. I forget how they are told. They form up by company and march down Stribling into T-Court and into Bancroft never to be seen again until Christmas. Unless Thanksgiving is close enough for parents to get there or Mid to get home. Can not be guaranteed.

"SEMPER GUMBY" always applies. Any and all times and any and all previous "locked in" dates, hotel rooms, house rental and various and sundry plans based upon Naval Academy schedules are all subject to change. Except Comissioning Week, I-Day, PPW and Parent's weekend for 2nd and 1st once announced. :shake:

I was thinking of a parent's rendevous. Nothing fancy or involved. Maybe a group hug! Just to put a face with a name! Maybe mid I-Day, while plebes are scurrying around?

buttons or nametags?

Just found this thread, count me in! I think coming up with a meeting place or wearing something that identifies us as forum members would be great! How about a nametag with our forum name, we will find each other all over the place...welcome tent...mid store...worden field...stribling walk. I plan on carrying extra kleenex :) Would be great to put faces with names! I met Popeyesmom on Monday and we had a great time!

You might just find me handing out "Proud Parent" bags in the Parents Welcome tent...
