I - Day

facebook group

I got the call from my senator a few days ago, and now that the celebrating is over, I'm looking for a way to get in touch with other appointees from my area. I live in southwest missouri, MO-7.

Does anyone know of a facebook group for appointees? Thanks

Hello...Our son just got the call last week and, at this point, he will be traveling alone. It would be great if there was something planned upon the cadets' arrival to do the night before but that's just "mom talking and worried"...ha! This is an adventure for all of us and as a "newbie" I LOVE this forum.....:thumb:

In the 2nd BFE there will be information about the AOG Bed and Breakfast program. It is a program that pairs unescorted Appointees with sponsor families that feed them dinner and breakfast and take them to Inprocessing. The Air Force has been doing this for over 50 years now. They will take good care of your DS. Congrats and best wishes. :thumb:

Hey guys, thanks for all the posting in here. If I get in, I know my parents will be extremely worried during BCT and I can only write so many letters. Even though I've already been away at college for a year, do you have any advice on making the 6 weeks easier? Were there things your kids did/didn't do that were good/bad during BCT or I-Day? Thanks for the advice! I'd like to try to make it as easy on my folks as I can... within reason of course

Show up in good shape. The altitude is a killer if you are a lowlander like DS. Make sure that you know the reason YOU want to be there. They WILL break you physically and it won't be fun. Remember that the yelling is not to be taken personally. Everything you do will be WRONG and you will be yelled at. Always look to your team for help and know you are all in this thing together.

As a parents, we provided friends and family with pre-addressed envelopes with instructions on what NOT to send in letters. DS received a lot of mail during BCT which was very encouraging. You might want to write yourself a few letters to remind you of your purpose and how excited you felt when you received the BFE. You can have your parents mail them to you at key times during BCT.

As a sponsored falcon, I hope it is not "If I get in", but rather "When I get in"! Best wishes! :thumb:

I don't doubt USAFA: 2016! will have any difficulties getting in. :thumb:

USAFA2016, you're probably right--you won't have a lot of time to write letters (or will be too exhausted to even consider it!). But here are a few things I would tell your parents as you head off to BCT. Definitely sign up for webguy (you'll get info in the second BFE)--its a group of photographers that take literally thousands of pictures during BCT (and other times) and post on their website. They are part of the AOG (Assoc. of Grads.). The first time I saw a pic of my son during BCT (and it was the very next day after I Day) was such a relief. I think I found at least 1 picture almost every day of BCT--it definitely helps to know he's alive and making it through! And to you, don't avoid the photographers when you see them during BCT--a friend's son tried to do that, leaving her wondering where he was. Warn them that you probably won't be smiling since you won't want to get yelled at by the cadre!

Next, tell your parents to hang by the phone on Doolie Day out (according to webguy its July 15 this year, a little different schedule than last year). On Doolie Day out, basics go to a sponsors house to hang out for the day. You will probably be able to use your cell phone or someone else's to call home. That is a great phone call!

They can also check into the Facebook USAFA 2016 Parents page--we have one for 2015 and its a great way to share info, stories, concerns, joys, etc with other parents going through the same thing. Webguy will also have a parent forum which is a great source of info.

Last thought--your parents can consider coming out for Acceptance Day at the end of BCT. Its a very short visit, but a great opportunity to see your cadet before he/she starts classes.

Hope some of these ideas help! Your parents will make it through, just like you!
