Hi there,

Was wondering if anybody could answer this question:

I have been wearing an ankle brace as extra support as I sprained my ankle when I was younger.

Am I allowed to wear the brace during plebe summer? If so, do I need to notify someone before or bring a note?

Thanks in advance!

99% sure you don't need special permission, but I could be wrong. Just bring it in your bag and take it out when you check in with your detailers.

Speaking as an athletic coach of both football and BB for over 16 years as well as a former firefighter you might want to rethink wearing it during less strenuous activities where there is little chance of injury like PT or jogging. Of course I'm NOT a MD and you should check with one, but over dependence on braces CAN do more harm than good by far as those muscles can weaken over time. Your other ankle may actually be stronger now than your previously injured one. It can also place strain on other parts of your body by reducing ankle mobility.

Just do some research and check with your MD and trainer.

Just a thought.

Is there anyone that I can speak to at the academy to just double check?

Just bring it. To be honest it's going to be a time issue. You will have time in the morning before PT, buts it's the other parts of the day when you are running around and changing uniforms that will be an issue. I have had 6 ankle breaks and few procedures on them... The best thing you can do is look up ankle strengthening exercises and work on them twice a day. For just a sprain years ago you should be fine without the brace, more than likely it's more mental than physical. It will save you big time in the long run. Ankle braces don't really fit in dress shoes (which you will chop (run) in) or combat boots. You will also PT in the hall and you won't necessarily be in PT gear, so you need to get used to it. In all honesty I wouldn't call and ask. All you are doing is highlighting yourself and might raise more questions about your health than answers.

Is it going to be a factor into whether or not you accept your appointment?

Work on strengthening your ankle and don't sprain it before I day. Bring the brace and let the chips fall as they may.

I completely agree. The only time I'd consider wearing it is during high risk sports like BB or volleyball.
