I know we've been told to bring the bare minimum to I-day but ….. DD has been a year round swimmer for a number of years and has expressed an interest in trying out for the swim team. Should she bring a suit, cap & goggles as well or would they just draw unwanted attention? If the latter, will they have stuff she can use?

    Thanx!

I was a recruited swimmer for WP many years ago. I believe during Beast we had to use our issued swimsuits (and she will certainly be issued one). I'm betting also they would have caps available (know I had many Army Swimming caps through the years), but as a minimum I would have her bring goggles that are comfortable for her since they'd be unlikely to have ones that she liked/fit her well, etc. Wouldn't add too much weight. If she wanted to bring a suit and cap, they wouldn't weigh much either, and worse case they'd just make her put them with her civilian clothes on I Day.

If you have corrective lenses you may want to bring corrective goggles they are about 15 bucks at most swim shops. I would suggest you contact coach converse with your times if you are interested in trying out and he could tell you what to bring

My d started there as a swimmer. They have a little get together at a restaurant the night before inprocessing. The bed and breakfast program knows about this and she got dropped off at the restaurant and then the family picked her up there. (they applied to be her sponsor family after that)
They passed off their swim bags to some one in the program so they could be transported to their lockers at some point. (this was all the fins, snorkel, suits, goggles, etc that you use for your club team, in her back pack) I know she was proud of the different IDtags from the sectional meets that were still attached. (they might still be there!)

I think it helps if you've contacted the coach ahead of time, and also completed the NCAA eligibility paperwork so you can practice with the team.

My d. said there was one walk on who turned out to be really fast, but because she was still considered a walk on the whole first year she couldn't travel---- he has to keep the overall number to a certain amount.
She really liked it and then was a regular member the second year.

My d's year they did lose one recruited swimmer during BCT (she got really sick) --got sent home, and then her parents just enrolled her in a regular school. The coach was disappointed since that was one of his better recruits. However, this would open the door for someone else.

Make sure and contact the coach! (the parent can do that part- just send her times and name, and home club.) I remember the parents bringing extra goggles and maybe practice suits because the team doesn't provide those. For parents weekend you get to go watch the practice and meet the other parents!!

The fencers I know were told to have their parents bring all their gear for Parents Weekend. We shipped the kids' stuff ($50+ for shipping). It is somewhat more bulky than a swimsuit and goggles.

For other sports, even if you are considering trying out for a walk-on position, please make sure you contact the coach (or assistants) before BCT, so you know what they might recommend.
