Jasperdog, Cmakin Deepdraft1 or anyone else, I pose a question. If and only if the government is shut down and Open House comes around, will KP be closed for Open House? Not to scare anyone.

I have absolutley no clue.

Bottom Line up front: No Definite Idea.

I do know that the definition of "essential services" has been significantly broadened since the last time a Continuing Resolution was allowed to lapse and there was a Government shutdown. I say this because even during a "shutdown" essential services are still automatically funded at their minimum required levels by statue, so things like Air Traffic Controllers; TSA screeners; military operations and pay at current authorized levels. However, I don't know what that means for the USMMA, in particular how the Open House is funded. Not trying to be long winded, it's just the possibility exists that if the basic operation of the Academy includes admissions office staff required to run the Open House, there could very well not be an issue either way. Of course that assumes the USMMA is either currently fully funded through this GFY or included in the expanded list of "essential services."

Cancellation quote for Open House

As quoted from "Kings Point Diversity, "Monday's Open House for Class of 2015 Appointees will be cancelled IF there is a "government shutdown." We apologize for any inconvenience this will cause."

KP lacrosse game at Goucher was just rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday because of uncertainty about the Fed budget.

Wow....I'm really wondering what I should do now, we are scheduled to fly out tomorrow morning. I thought I would take DS to NY early to tour the city, but if everything is cancelled I really don't want to go..the main purpose to see USMMA. DS was going to the open house and then the next day do a overnight visit....

Where was this posted?? .............. I'm sort of out of the loop as far as watching the news...govt shutdown:eek:, have been in Disney for the last 4 days......

My DS received a phone call today from a USMMA representative stating that the Open House would be canceled IF our government officials could not reach a resolution by tomorrow. A government shutdown would also affect our Service Academies.

We didn't receive a call......hmmmmm

Well I think instead of touring NY tomorrow when we arrive, we are going to KP so at least he can see the campus.....if the Government shuts down and the open house is cancelled.

That sounds like a good plan. Also, if there is a shutdown, after you ckeck out USMMA on Friday, you might want to think about visiting SUNY Maritime in the Bronx (which is state-funded, and not affected by the federal budget). I know it's not the same as USMMA, but if you have general questions about the Merchant Marine and about what is involved in the study of marine transportation/engineering, it could be a helpful visit. Also, and I don't know your personal situation, it might be something to consider as a "Plan B." You might be able to tour the training ship at Maritime as well (not sure if they offer this, but I once toured the training ship at Maine Maritime). I think that would possibly be very helpful for someone considering the study of commercial shipping.

Just a suggestion-I know it's not an ideal situation, but it might be something to consider as a way to turn lemons into lemonade.

We made it to ny!! Right off the plane went to usmma so ds could see the academy...great news...he loves it!! Seeing it in person he now knows he made a great choice!! Met some 4th years who answered a lot of questions for him, they were so upbeat about the academy which gave me some assurance too!!

If govt shuts down, the open house is definitely off per admissions...so saying lots of prayers that govt won't shut down. We would love to go to the open house.

Sprog, thanks for the great info, ds has accepted his appt to usmma, he is sooooo happy right now that he was able to see the academy!! Truly a hidden gem!

According to the news websites, the shutdown should be adverted thanks to some deals (at least for now). Does that mean Open House is still on?

We'll be there

The admissions office told me today to watch the news. If the shutdown is averted the open house will continue as planned. We will press on Sunday. See you Monday. They also said that 80 potential midshipmen were scheduled to attend the open house along with family.

Shutdown was averted thankfully, so all academies are open and open house will take place. However don't be surprised if both sides threaten it again when the next budget hearing comes around.
