Illinois Boy's State

As I posted earlier, that varies by state. In some states is it VERY competitive to get selected to attend (everyone who applies does not get selected) and that is part of the reason SA's consider this of value. I can't speak to how many states are selective vs. not. If it becomes something that the majority can attend just by submitting an application & paying a fee, then SA's will probably reassess its value to them.

Sorry I made you repeat what you said earlier. I guess I didn't understand what you meant by it varying by state, but now I do so thanks.

Did you check the other 49 to see if they are the same?

I just assumed that there was no way Illinois could be the ONLY state that doesn't have a competitive boys state program, especially with the city of Chicago.

We homeschooled too, and were without the vaunted services of a Guidance Counselor - or wait, we had two: Mom and Dad.

Do what you LOVE, excel at it, and do all the work to make y our dreams happen.

@fencersmother -
My son went to a graduation party for a fellow new cadet this summer. As it happened, he ended up seated next to the cadet's guidance counselor. She was the one who helped this cadet with his WP application. When my son mentioned that he was homeschooled, she asked who helped him with his application and he told her that he did it by himself. Left her speechless. I wish I had been a fly on the wall... :)

This forum has been my 'guidance counselor' for the past 6 months. I have learned a ton about all the academies and ROTC here. Neither of my parents were in the military. They know nothing of the process and they don't plan on learning it. They have said that if this really is my dream, I have to work for it by myself without them. I actually think that it is better that I am going at this on my own because it allows me to go my own way. It allows me to fail and succeed and try things I want to try. I think that I am doing pretty well on my own, and although I have failed a few times, I have learned from those failures and have definitely grown into a better person. Thank you to everyone who has given me advice about boys state.

I have been having a similar issue regarding California Girls State. I managed to dig around online (the official website was outdated) and got in contact with my district coordinator who recently told me that she found a unit in my area willing to sponsor me. Still need to get in contact with the unit, but just wanted to offer some encouragement! If you don't mind calling random numbers and sending emails you will be able to find information and maybe even a sponsor.
