Impact of past defense cuts should warn of risks

I want my president to be able to entertain in a first class setting whether or not I agree with his politics or not. He's entitled to entertain and there is a budget for doing it, more power to him. But all personal food and drink is paid by him, just as it was for every other president.

I would hope he's not wasting the effort on the local PTA or hsi daughter's bowling team. Again, I shy away from taking perks away from the Democrat president just because we differ politically. He is the President of the United States of America and is entitled to the perks that come with it.

Both Ben's Chili Bowl and 5 Guys are over rated. Bland chili (the dog is not bad) and free peanuts while I wait for a double burger do not attract me. As for Philly, I have never heard of "Jim's" but Pat's and Genos are both pretty good places for cheesesteaks.

Jesus christ...Luigi and I agree on something. He's the leader of the free world. I don't expect him to have Croghan bologna and cheese curd laid out at a state dinner (extra points if you know what Croghan bologna is).

I like 5 Guys, but for the record Obama's favorite burger spot is Ray's Hell Burger, right across the Key Bridge.

Confused here...you agree that this budget exists, but then you say his personal food and drinks are paid by him. The people invited are MOCs, lobbyists, wheelers and dealers. This is not being labeled as a social event, put an invite only using social practices as the way to do business.

That is my problem, I don't believe as a President you need to schmooze lobbyists in a social environment. They are paid to represent a particular group, socially hanging with them does no good, but to reduce your stature. You are the President, it is not like the lobbyist is going to change their position because they had a martini with you. They are being paid to defend a position, their job is to their client 1st and foremost. A cocktail hour is not going to change the clients position regarding what they are lobbying for.

I don't see this as a WIN for the administration. All they did was schmooze.

I never said take away perks. I agree they should have perks. Let's be honest, they work hard, regardless of their party, and we should respect them for that.

My point was/is before you start beeaaching about AF1 and flying around the world or the vacations, you should see that you are jumping over the nickels to pick up the pennies. AF1 just due to military requirements for flight status will be flying. Taking the Obama's to Spain, fills some of those flight requirements. Having a cocktail hr every Wednesday night doesn't.

I have no problem if as parents they entertain the PTA of the Sidwell school. That now would be on their own dime. I think this is where the confusion comes regarding the Happy hour. The Obama's don't pay a dime for that happy hour because it is entertaining for the job... MOC's, lobbyists, leaders in industry. Ordering in pizza and having the Sidwell PTA in your PRIVATE residence would fall on the Obama dime, regardless if you used the bowling alley or tennis courts.

God knows how you can eat a double burger at 5 guys! I have to always order the jr and I still take 1/2 home as a left over. 5 Guys by the way just won the Zagat's award for best burgers.

Jim's and Pat's have been rivals for decades. Jim's is located on South Street in Philly. The two of them are like Philly pretzels vs NYC pretzels or Chicago pizza vs NY pizza. You have strong opinions either way!

I think I must be reading into this issue differently than you. From what I am reading, Luigi is saying that Weds night happy hour is being paid for by the Obama's.
But all personal food and drink is paid by him, just as it was for every other president.

I am saying that he is charging the American taxpayer to wheel and deal during these parties, thus it is not paid by him. It is paid privately by him to have the PTA parents of Sidwell over for their meeting monthly meeting.

Nobody expects him to lower the stds for a state dinner. Everyone expects that the Obama's play the part that previous presidents did. I am just saying some one explain to me why he feels the need to do weekly happy hours at the WH on our dime. Yes, it is our dime, because it is being seen as professional not personal. DO you think that Bush personally paid for it when Teddy Kennedy watched a movie with him? No, that was business to get the No Child Left Behind passed, it wasn't personal.

Sorry, but I have a problem with this issue. It is even more amazing to me because administrations like Reagan got their ARSE handed to them because they bought new WH china, yet, we are in a recession, GDP is down, debt is up, the dow is at 10K, (@10% below July 2008), 10% unemployment, 10% of homeowners are in active foreclosure, 28% of homeowners are under water, military members are being asked to do with less because of defense budget cuts, and our President is having weekly cocktail parties. Sorry, but again he is Jimmy Carter...I feel your pain, while at the same time he does the exact opposite of what he asks for from Americans.

Feel my pain...okay, how about this, tell Michelle, her and the girls have no need to waste taxpayer dollars to go to Spain via the AF. Tell her that it is important we set an example, and going to NYC for the night to see a Broadway play is not how we do it. Tell her our Chicago home is being covered and Valentines Day will be spent here in DC at L'Auberge (who is so famous Visa made a commercial about...they don't take AMEX).

I have no problem with their summer vacation, they deserve it and privately paying for it, but truly it is BS to say they have not gotten a pass from MSM. Tell me why people made such a big deal about Bush 43 playing golf, but at the same time nobody talks about the fact that Obama has played more rounds in 2 yrs than Bush did in 8 yrs in office. Where is the MSM dogging Obama about that? Bush 43 got dogged by Howard Stern and MSNBC because he read a book to 6 yr olds when they whispered in his ear about the WTC, he then got dogged for flying around the country and not returning to DC. MSM did not accept the fact that it was protocol, they wanted to make him the poster boy of wasting tax dollars and being a coward. Michael Moore was their leader in this issue.

GW and Laura Bush were known in the beltway circle for visiting wounded soldiers privately. The Obama's not so much. Worse yet, Michelle Obama has taken the military family as her platform for 1st lady. I am still involved in the OCSC, Lynne Cheney has been a guest speaker multiple times(both as 2nd 1st lady, and now a civilian) in this area, Michelle has yet to accept the offering, nor has Jill Biden. Don't tell me the military is your platform like reading was to Laura Bush, and then decline an invitation from the military spouses to be a guest speaker....let's remember, security is not a real issue because bases/posts are closed with 100% ID...again talking and walking are 2 different things.

I am anxiously awaiting tomorrow night...will Obama make the same mistake as Bush by saying "mission accomplished" for Iraq, when we still have 50K military members there?

Isn't that the upity uck Bologna from New York?

Upity uck? I hope you don't mean it's high class. It comes from the croghan deli in the backwoods adirondack town of Croghan, which is about the size of a large trailer park and just as classy.

Don't knock bologna...fried with sauteed onions on a Kaiser roll with mustard can make anyone a fan of bologna, throw an egg on it and you have reached a new level of cuisine:shake:

We digress...

Now my Mother is from Pennsylvania. Therefore real Bologna is named for Lebanon Valley PA. Nothing else will do!

And in Western PA it's Isaly's Chip-Chopped Ham or nothing. (Well, maybe a Primanti Bros sandwich will do).

Geeze I love this, some how the discussion has become about Bologna and Hot dogs from a thread that was about defense spending. The irony is both are products filled with fat, and parts that would not be sellable in the common market place.

Now before the mods get involved I have to say in the South those red hot dogs are nasty looking.

Additionally, I am not a bologna fan, but I LOVE pork roll!

FYI Croghan Bologna isn't bologna at all. It's summer sausage.

Thanks Scout and TPG for identfying the source of those "Bologna" delicacies.
I'm certain that No one knows what those unbelievably bad Southern red hot dogs are that PIMA mentioned. I was, BTW first exposed to those in 1976 at VMI- I was somewhat stunned to discover that the VMI MessHall could destroy Hot Dogs-I was later informed by some southern boy that they were supposed to taste like that:eek: I still believe that the color indicates they are radioactive waste product.

We had one like this last year. Last I saw/heard, USAFA and some other people did a good job of correcting the issue. Perhaps we'll hope the same again this year. :thumb:

Not to boast or anything, but bring it! Anyhow, I fail to see how any of that would change my lack of intelligence. Oh, wait...
YESSIR! Why did you feel the need to post that? And.....get over yourself.
...That was totally off topic. My bad!
