I'm going to be a junior after this summer, and after looking at the profiles of people who have received appointments I am beginning to wonder whether shooting for West Point is realistic. It has always been my dream to get admitted, although I am a military child and attend DODEA schools (which don't have as many opportunities as regular high schools) .I discovered this site and found it to be a great wealth of information, so I hope that any of you guys can take the time to give advice regarding on anything else I could do to to strengthen my application.

Freshman and Sophomore Year:
-4.0 GPA
-NHS Member
-6 varsity letters total from tennis, basketball and softball
-Tennis Captain in 10th gr.
-1st chair in band and both years (accepted into Honors Festival 10th gr.)
-Student Council Officer 9th and 10th
-JROTC Superior Cadet

Junior Year Classes:
-AP US History
-AP Lang
-AP Chemistry
-JROTC III
-Band
-MUN
*Should I drop band and MUN for more AP classes?

I am at the top of my class and will be a company commander this year. I also plan on continuing all my sports, run for student council, apply to girls state and join the drill team. What else can I do to become more competitive?

Have you taken the ACT &/or SAT yet? Those scores will weigh heavily in your application. Class rank is very important too. You should take MATH your junior & senior years, preferably up to/including Calculus. Take the hardest classes your school offers (AP, dual enrollment/college level, IB, etc). What state/district are you in? You are also competing against your peers for a nomination.

I will be taking the ACT in August, although my PLAN score is 26. I'm working hard over the summer to improve that. I am also taking Pre-Cal in Junior year and AP Stats/Calc my senior year. I'm iffy on which state to apply for a nomination due to the fact that I am in Fort Campbell but my resident state is California.

Try not to overload yourself too much with sports and things like band and drill team. Make sure you can manage your classes first, ACT second, and everything else third. If you feel like you can handle doing all the extra then by all means, it does nothing but make you look better but I would stress to you taking the ACT as many times as humanly possible before you graduate. It is a difficult test that many people leave till the last minute to take. Study for that, do well in school and be a leader in whatever you care about and you're on your way.
