    Dear All,
Do you have to apply for the 2 year in-college scholarship by the semester before your Junior year? Or can it be your semester before your final two years of college? I am majoring in EE, minoring in Math, so it would take me extra two semesters to graduate.
    Thanks!

Seems like a good quesiton to ask your cadre, unless I'm missing something. They should be able to help you with this.

Kinnem, How is your college programmer doing? Any prospects of a scholarship on the horizon?

His application is due to be completed by the end of the month at least as far as getting it to the assistant Marine Officer Instructor (AMOI). He then makes sure its complete and adds his endorsement. He then gets interviewed by the MOI who then adds his endorsement. Finally it goes to the PNS who adds his endorsement before sending it to the board. The board meets sometime in April.

His stats look pretty good to me. 3.7 GPA, 296 of 300 on the PFT. Perfect CFT as I recall. Squad leader this semester and participated in an intramural sport. Made the drill team and works out with the Spec Warfare club, which is totally optional. Also some service hours and a rather odd EC (ballroom dancing). Also has part time (8 hour) job but I don't know if that gets listed on the application.

I think he has as good a shot at it as anyone in the battalion, if not the best shot. He is certainly the fittest MIDN and one of the top 4 in fitness in the battalion. But there are only 80 side load 3 year scholarships this year and he is not a tier 1 major and an MO at that, so we shall see. If not then we try again next year. There will be 108 2 year scholarships next year so the odds will be a bit better. In any case I'm confident he will achieve Advanced Standing, unless he totally screws up between now and then - which as always a possibility.

Thanks for asking. Good luck on the scholarship! :thumb:

Kinnem, over the past 18 months I have read quite a few publications from NETC about target Scholarships, side-load, etc., and it is my impression that Marine Option is never lumped together with Navy Option or Nurse Option in NRTOC. The 80 side-loads are for Navy Option, divided among all Navy Option mids across the country. There could be 30 side-loads reserved for Marine Option, or zero, or 50. Whatever the number, it will be competed for by only Marine Option mids.

At least that's the conclusion I've drawn from the documents I've seen... which by the way, once replaced by the current year's version of the document, disappears from the NSTC website.

Thanks dunninla. I knew the number for MO would be less than 80, but I didn't make that clear. In any case it is a small number and not even enough for each unit to have a chance of getting at least one from either option. Glad you clarified though for the lurkers. Many will apply, few will be chosen. :thumb:

Well no scholarship this year. DS thought application was due the end of the month. He turned it in yesterday and was told it would not be forwarded as it was due the day before. Only 1 kid got it in on time. Another is in same boat as DS. My attitude is that it was his responsibility to know the due date. I don't know whether to laugh, cry, strangle him or shoot myself. At this point I only hope he learns something from it.:eek::thumbdown::frown::mad::rolleyes:

    Kinnem,

I am truly sorry. It is really hard watching our kids learn these hard lessons. You have been a fantastic support for your DS--I trust that he will find his path, despite this very disappointing setback.

    Kinnem,
Crushing news! Your DS seemed to be doing everthing right, sorry for the set back. From your posts your DS seems to excel in overcoming adversity, I'm sure he will again.

kinnem, sorry to hear about your son's setback. Unfortunately many of us have to learn a few lessons the hard way.

Kinnem: sorry to hear the news. Your son sounded like a strong candidate.

For what it is worth, my son heard there will only be 20 in-college scholarships available this year. Not sure if that is a region or nationwide. Not sure how that might compare to previous years but assume it is far less.

Thanks for the info USMCGrunt. I hadn't heard a number but that's in the ballpark of what I expected. DS is trying to find out how they were 'notified' of the date as MSgt. email said 'end of the month'. If there was no other notification (i expect there was and he somehow missed it) he may 'appeal' the decision to not forward the scholarship app. Not a good position to put himself in but I'm leaving all this to him. MOI is being 'RIFed' so with everything I'm sure he (MOI) has on his mind it is possible it was overlooked. It is what it is. All will work to the best I'm sure.
