So here is the situation. I just recieved a LOA to the academy this afternoon but I am still in need of a nomination. I have heard from my congressmen and a senator and thier decision was a no. The other senator I have yet to hear from. I've been advised to send in my LOA to both senators and my congressman in case something opens up. I'm going to call the academy tomorrow to ask thier advice on how to proceed but I'd greatly appreciate anyone else's advice. Oh and i'm from Colorado in the 5th congressional district.

Thanks

Definitely contact both senators and representative. They may have only had 1 or so slots available, so they were offering it to someone else. However, if you have an LOA; then you can be the #10 last name on their slate and you get the appointment. So it's possible that you can get a nomination and an appointment, and they will know that it won't affect the person they made as their primary nomination. But they need to no. If 2 out of 3 already said no, then there is absolutely NOTHING that can be a negative if you contact them. Definitely contact them. And definitely contact the academy. Obviously, there is a reason you were offered an LOA. If the academy wants you enough to offer you an LOA, most times the MOC will trust their judgment. good luck. mike....

I received an alternate nomination from my congressman to USAFA. What exactly does it mean?

It means you received a nomination, but you aren't their "Principal" nominee. Which means, they rank their slate. Means, IF their "Principal" nominee accepts their appointment; which they are almost guaranteed of getting, then you will go into the "General Pool" that the academy will select from. If the "Principal" nominee turns down an appointment, or otherwise become ineligible, you would be #1. In other words, you're #2 on their list.

CAVEAT: Each senator/representative is free to Misuse words. They could mean that "Alternate" is everyone else on their list of ten, other than the #1. But generally, alternate means the #2 slot.
