I was wondering what day people are planning on arriving for Indoc, a few days ahead, day before? Are there any activites the day before for canidates and their families?

Also, we got the Logging In packet and a medical packet but not the papers from the Dept. of Naval Science, do those come seperate or are we missing something?

We will be arriving the day before and staying at the Andrew for the first time.

Along with the medical papers, there is a form for national security positions to be filled. It's a 2 pages questionaire which will be forwarded to DNS by the academy

I saw a reference in the Logging In book to a form 86 (?) I don't have it with me right now but it wanted a copy of the birth certificate too. Are you talking about the questions about prior drug and alcohol use? I'm so confused!

In the past, the sports teams have hosted a BBQ the day before Indoc. Check with the coaches of the sport your child is interested in.

kpwehope. I think you are correct, DNS is supposed to mail SF 86 which has to be hand delivered back on I-day

Flying in a couple of days early

Since we are flying from Idaho, DS wanted to fly in a couple days early. So we are flying in on the 6th. This give us a day to go into the city and play tourist and a day for him to simply relax before Indoctrination. We are staying at the Glen Cove Mansion. It is farther away, but the price is comparable and it has a pool and nice outdoor areas.

Since we're more or less local (2 1/2 hour drive if it's not rush hour), we're coming in the afternoon before and staying at the Inn at Great Neck. Husband and son stayed there in April before Open House and really liked it. I haven't even seen the campus yet.

We're planning to stay at the Inn at Great Neck, too. It sounds like several guests will be future KPers. It'll be nice meeting some others before Indoc.

You would be surprised at the varying ways people will show up. I was dropped off at the airport the day before Indoc and sent on my way. I stayed at what is now the Andrew; however, every other hotel stay was then at either the Inn at Great Neck or the Marriott(only once, but only because it's a bit far) out in Garden City. The Inn at Great Neck is great, but on the expensive side. If you haven't already I would call to request a room on the non-railroad side. If you aren't used to trains you might not sleep well as the LIRR runs directly behind the Inn.

Best of luck and enjoy it!

For the past four years, we have tried several of the local hotels. The best we have found was the Marriott Long Island Convention Center. Clean, comfortable (beds are excellent) and quiet (unless the Islanders are playing or a concert is at the arena). It is in a very good area next to Hofstra University. The mall is approximately 2 miles away as is the Long Island Railroad. Excellent Diner nearby as is your middle of the road eating establishments i.e...P.F. Chang's, Cheesecake Factory. They do honor military/government rates.

Hotels

The doubletree in Jamaica just told the National Parents Coordinator, Shirley Anthony, that they will give special rates to USMMA folks. www.doubletreejfk.com 718-322-2300. It's a nice hotel and is close to JFK and they also have a Van from JFK to the hotel. Worth a try. :thumb:

We stayed at the Mansion at Glen Cove and loved it.

We have stayed there several times and have reservations for Parents Weekend in Sept. With the academy discount and tax, it runs about $200 a night. It's nice, the rooms aren't real big but big enough. The location is great. The train station across the street has a bus stop the will take you to the front gate.

I have some experience with the Andrew & here is a tip: Don't let Mids take off on a joy ride & return to attempt to park a large SUV type vehicle when they can't find the valet guy. It can result in a 12" long crater down the side of said vehicle when not cutting it around their walled lot.

They used to be valet only parking so not only do they whack you that fee for two steps to your car, ya gotta tip the guy who took the two steps to get it for you so be sure and ask for those little hidden "fees" when reserving. LOL That said, we're staying their for graduation. I'll try to remember to snap a shot of our rooms before we bomb them with clothes & bottle of champagne & post them here. They are pretty small rooms but we figured we won't be in them much.

We stayed at the Andrew for Indoc in 07. Nice, clean, small rooms, very expensive (even with the discount) and the parking I thought was a rip. Tip a guy to go 5 steps to get your car and charge you and additional $15 per night to park there. ugh! If you have a car I would stay a bit farther out. If no car, then it is very convenient as said below.

How does one go about getting an invitation to the pre-Indoc Waterfront BBQ? DS is interested in Power Squadron and I understand that attending the various pre-Indoc 'festivities' is de rigueur.

Anchor Inn

Anyone staying at the Anchor Inn before Indoc? My son and I stayed there a few weeks ago when he went for an overnight visit. Our family has reservations there before Indoc.

We will be staying at the Greak Neck Inn. Looking foward to meeting all of you. I think our son will be attending the BBQ so maybe we can car pool to drop them off and pick them up. Then we can stategize on how to support them and us during their 4 years. I am sure the years will fly by. High School certainly did.

We have reservations at the Anchor Inn for July 8th as well as Parent Weekend. We're driving in that morning to attend the swim team gathering and then come back and try to get some sleep. We stayed there for DS overnight visit as well as the open house but they were both quick visits. It was nice to be fairly close with a short drive to KP. Hope to see you there Coolsailing!
