Injury Report

We are a bit stuck in limbo. DS had an elbow injury (hyper-extension) during football season. He missed a game and then played the rest of the season with a brace to avoid further injury. At time of medical review, he was still in football season and received a DQ from DoDMERB. We were told by Admissions in December that his file is before the medical team for review but have not heard anything. In the meantime, he has fully recovered and played the entire basketball season (and now lacrosse) without any bracing, pain or limitation. So question, is there anything we can/should do to let either DoDMERB or the Academy know that he is recovered?

bcope, if I were you, I would let DoDMERB know ASAP by sending paperwork signed by your doctor stating that your DS is fully recovered and has no physical limitations. I am guessing this update could make the difference between qualified and DQ, since they are probably assuming he still needs the brace. DoDMERB even says on their website that they will consider documentation submitted at any time.

P.S. I have called DoDMERB before with questions, and they were really nice and helpful. They will be able to tell you exactly how/to whom you should send the paperwork.

Best of luck to you and your DS! ;)

My DD was DQed for an ACL tear. She received a waiver after we sent in a note from the doctor that specifically said:

''<DD> is cleared for all sports/military service with no limitations."

Thanks for the advice. Called DoDMERB and they said to have his doctor fax in a note and USNA will see it when they pull the file. It is going out today. In the meantime, we watch the mailbox.

Just a quick note. When submitting documents to DODMERB scan them if you can and email them to the help desk. IMO they are processed FASTER than snail mail or fax.

Further follow-up so future applicants know as much about this process as possible -

DS (who has a BFE) received notification from the Medical Technician at USNA that he has been DQ'd by DoDMERB because his wrist has not yet healed. This is as we expected - sending the records to DoDMERB (which is required for a change to medical status) kicked off the process. Ms. Weber sent a very nice, personal note of reassurance that they will submit the waiver once all records are received, including his return to full unlimited activity, and that she didn't want him to be taken by surprise when he gets the notification.

Timing: LOA/nomination/appointment received in December -> surgery end of December -> all records submitted to DoDMERB and USNA -> at surgery+4 weeks was notified no change to offer -> at surgery+6 weeks notified of DQ. Expect to be cleared end of March/early April (surgery+12-14 weeks). Surgery was a vascularized bone graft open repair of broken scaphoid, and we continue to send records to DoDMERB after each dr visit. The healing is coming along (not fast enough for me).

After this we will invest in bubble wrap!

Just updating this to say DS was cleared to return to all activity at 12 weeks post-surgery. We sent in the records from his last visit to DoDMERB and USNA and have been biting our nails ever since. His DoDMERB portal updated today that DS's waiver was approved. Took about 2 weeks from date the report was submitted to seeing this status update. Very thankful that this chapter is over!
