Interesting Article: No Skirts for Midshipmen at USNA Graduation

Will males have a bun at the back of the cover? Skirts optional?

Never thought about you being female! Shame on me!!!! Been reading your posts for years. I have the same level of personal embarrassment I had when I didn't figure out the age old riddle about the physician's son dying in the auto accident. Darn it all!

Haha! No problem. I most certainly am. My Dad used to jokingly tell everyone that his kid went to the Naval Academy, played D1 basketball and then became a Marine, then he mentioned it was his daughter just for fun. I am pretty sure Hurricane, Capt MJ and I could sit around with some beverages discussing the amount of times we have been called Sir, been mistaken for men and shocked at the arrival of a woman, Hurricane and I have probably been called WM way more than anyone can even fathom, and discuss the finer intricacies of the bad uniforms we have lived with over the years.

Oh yes. Got a lot of "sir-MA'AMs" back in the day. Still get them on the phone, because my voice is in Kathleen Turner's vocal registry. Beverages aye, sea stories in quantity.

Several of our USNA alumni sponsor daughters texted me last night - from flight school, from Spain, from sub pipeline, from grad school, essentially asking WTH with skirt flap and every one commenting there were bigger issues to address.

As I noted in my first post, a thread on uniform issues has eternal life.

Exactly what I said to all my buddies as it was tossed around on texts and social media. Heck the fact they have pants is progress so I have a totally different view as that wasn't an option for us.

Navyhoops: I see the same thing. Kid is USNA graduate and they see the shirt. Where is He Stationed? Sorry, She is Marine Officer at Quantico. Hoist a few for the Corps.

We all went out to graduation dinner after TBS. Friend of my daughter who was on delayed graduation from USNA and scheduled to start TBS was also with us. They are all in dress as all Marines looking good. Guy leaving the place thanks him for his service as he leaves. DD says "what the hell" I have the fruit salad and silver on my uniform and the guy never even said thank you. Sir/Mam was a common mistake.

Depends on new USNA PC regarding gender neutrality. Heard transsexuals, transvestites are being considered for appointments. Say it isn't so.

Before the age of political correctness some smartass from USAFA or USMA would have commented that they thought USNA broke that barrier years ago and in mass.

Could never say that today

Well, Seabee, the sad reality is that the services have long departed from the idea of having "the most effective fighting force" in the world. Right or wrong, it is now about integration of a diverse group of individuals into the most effective fighting force it can be. If it was truly about the former instead of the later then the application would not ask about race, gender, etc. and would just have academic, leadership and physical fitness standards. If it resulted in only 3 women being admitted then that would be what it is. My brother is a Captain, who worked at NAVPERS and was part of a study, which had non-PC results (his reporting it to the highest levels probably kept him from making Admiral). The studies showed that there was a much higher rate of women getting out of the military after the initial obligation and that when female officers decided to have families prior to a deployment, it put additional requirements and stress on their male counterparts, which resulted in a negative reenlistment rate. I remember this being a big issue when I had an 80 person division that was around 60% male 40% female. Right before deployment we'd have a number of females get pregnant. There wasn't time to get them replaced and we got underway, undermanned (or underpersoned :) ). Don't get me wrong, as a Supply Officer, the physical demands weren't such that any female USNA grad couldn't have done my job, but to ignore the other unique differences between males and females is to ignore the essence of who we are and the result isn't "the most effective fighting force." The reality is embracing that it is not about best integrating diversity and trying to make it as effective as possible.

Have served with incredibility talented female Sailors, many continued on to serve out their obligations. Have also seen the planned pregnancy service opt out. Sorry to hear about your brother. Darn shame honest assessment reports come with retaliation. Have found it
is better to choke on greatness than to chew on mediocrity. Guessing Gender neutrals, Transgenders and Transsexuals are now receiving appointments at USNA. Lord help us. God Bless America.

Can they not just shave everyone's head on I-day? Why the gender difference there? If we want uniformity, make the hair standards the same. Removes all objections then for females wearing the same cover.

Agreed. Looks like all the female Army Ranger candidates had to have the same haircut as the male candidates.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

When I was a cadet the big issue was woman having to pay for both male and female covers (for drill). So they ditched the male covers (for females).

Good God NO! Lord made us different and hope it stays that way. I'm confused enough already.

Confused?
Confused to the current ability to differentiate between some birth male and some females. Confused to the whole self assignment gender identity as apparently that can change with the wind. Shall birth males have the ability to self assign to female, join and compete with birth female sports teams, shower with birth females, bunk with birth females? Confused as how admitting self assigned genders to USNA helps produce the best Naval Officers possible!

Yeah. We've been water cooler discussing that a bit. If usna recognizes this gender fluidity thing, why not just allow men and women to room together? I mean if they allow two gay men or women to room together, why not hetero mixed gender rooms?

Everybody get out your sleds. Here comes the slippery slope.
