This is some info from my area and the breakdown. In the next few weeks, most MOC will have made selection for nominations to SA. And must be reported by the end of January 2014.

The dust on the new 113th Congressional Districts has seemed to settle. More specifically, Orange County District numbers have dropped from 9 to 7. One of these is a New District, Congressman Alan Lowenthal, CA 47 which covers Long Beach and the Catalina Islands.

In my summer 2013 Admissions Report, I mentioned that 401 young men and women, whose home of record is in Orange County, opened a file for the Class of 2017. The number of Orange County applicants that received and accepted an “Offer of Admission” was seventeen. One of our nine districts did not have any qualified applicants.

Numbers for the Class of 2018 applicants from Orange County is: 231.

Provided in the table following is a break-out of the candidates by “Candidate Potential.” This is a snap-shoot in time as, the individual “Candidates Potential” can go up or down based on file data, i.e., SAT/ACT scores, Medical Examination status, Candidate Fitness Assessment scores, file completion, college students have unacceptable grades, etc.

    CANDIDATE POTENTIAL

    NUMBER

    Admissible

    7

    Qualified

    2

    Competitive

    59

    Disqualified

    1

    Risk

    46

    Undetermined

    26

    USMA Screened

    55

    Candidate Withdrawn

    15

    USMA Closed

    20

Admissible, Qualified, Competitive: Are indicators of the candidate’s potential. But, does not mean at this point in the admission process that they will receive an “Offer of Admission.”

Disqualified: Relates to results of the candidates medical examination.

Risk: There are select issues in the candidates file, typically SAT/ACT scores.

Undetermined: A candidate opened a file, but did not include critical information like SAT/ACT scores, etc.

USMA Screened: Main reason is non-competitive SAT/ACT scores. More specifically a candidate cannot raise their SAT/ACT scores to a competitive range within the admission cycle. Typically SAT’s are in the low 500/s per test event and lower. ACT’s are similar with scores in the low 20’s, high teens per test event.

USMA Closed: On Monday, 18 Nov ’13, I was at Northwestern Preparatory School and had a chance to talk with COL McDonald. This year I was alerted to the fact that the Academy would close files of candidates who received their 2nd Step Kit in July thru EOM September who have little to no file completion. These candidates were notified via letter that unless they made a marked improvement in file completion by EOM Oct, their files would be closed. They were closed on 1 Nov ’13.

Some data on “Letter of Assurances (LOA)”; “Letter of Encouragement (LOE)” and Recruited Athletes.

    Letters of Assurance: 5
    Recruited Athletes: 2
    Candidates: 3
    Letters of Encouragement: 7
“Offers of Admission” for the Class of 2018 will start being mailed out in mid-to late January ’14. The target class size for the Class of 2018 is 1,200 New Cadets.

    Offers....

The bulk of Class 2018 will be notified in the beginning of March. Offers will begin mid-January for prior enlisted and foreign Cadet Candidates.

This is the beginning of the most difficult part, the waiting, it sucks. Stay positive and do what you can do to improve your WCS

So here is my question. My DS has had his file QQQ at this point. Where would you put him on potential for appointment at this point. His interview is this friday. I have asked the MOC advisor if they do principal nominations, and he stated that they would do them.

Thank you so much for you input and information. It is so appreciated during this stress time.

What's the difference between Qualified and Admissible? The Nomination?

400 to 230 applicants. Is that because of the re-districting? Or do you think interest is down?

Hard to believe that there are only 9 (7+2) qualified applicants out of 231 that started a file.

    @ 18er...

I don't know why the applicant pool has a difference of almost half from one year to the other. I'll ask and find out more.

    That's within the norm

Started a file means, you went to the West Point website and filled out some information

I would say about 50% or more don't to anything else

Of remaining 50% or less candidates evaluated to be risk won't be allow to work on their application, probably another 25% or more

Of remaining 25% or less, some don't finish their applications, some get medical disqualified, some fail CFA, and some get academically disqualified. One year in my Congressional district, had no qualified candidate.

7 LOEs from seven districts. Do you think this year they will be sending out more than 200 - 300 LOE's? My DS received one and we were hopeful he was one of a few.

Only admissions knows for certain but I would be surprised if more than 300 are sent.

    LOE.....

Since its introduction last year, there were a guestimation of 150 to 200. This year the guestimation is up in the air. If you do get one, you're in great company. Its doesn't guarantee anything other than gives you a boost of confidence and the opportunity to spend some quality time with a Cadet/s if you take advantage of the opportunity.

Is the LOE/LOA phase over, or is it possible that more will be sent?

Impossible to say for sure but last year my DS received one in late December. Did any go out in Jan or early Feb? I don't know.

Since the first round of BFEs go out in Feb, the longer it goes into Jan I would think the less likely you are to see a LOE and instead see a BFE.

Is your application complete? My impression was that the primary purpose of LOE was to get the candidate to complete the application.
