For any current mids, or people-in-the-know:

I know that the internet access is limited, but I was curious about sites like youtube. I have seen many USNA spirit spots etc. posted to youtube, so I was hoping that our plebe might be able to view videos we post to our family site.

Any helpful information is greatly appreciated.

I-Day 13 days and counting...

We have full access to sites like Facebook, Youtube, etc. The only way internet is limited is with IT's use of Websense. If it picks up a tagged keyword in a website description, it automatically blocks the page. This only happens if you're trying to look up some questionable content, but some stuff does get blocked that shouldn't be. You can just contact Ward Hall and they'll check it out...if it's OK, it'll be unblocked.

USNA is not a standard "DoD network," thus Information Technology Services Division (ITSD, aka Ward Hall) has gone to bat for MIDN and received permission to allow certain websites.

Social networking is actually becoming a "thing" in the Navy. ADM Stavridis (SOUTHCOM) and NAVSURFOR have profiles/groups on Facebook and Twitter.

Websense used to block questionable sites like ESPN.com and Victoriassecret.com. Questionable stuff, for sure. If one is bored, it is fun to try and go websenseless and test the limits of the system.
