Iran Releases 10 US Navy Sailors in Gulf

Looks like USMA cadets are running with a spirit mission -- "Navy Gave Up the Ship - 01JUN1813-12JAN16" picture on Yik Yak

At least it's a boat and not a ship. A ship would really be embarrassing.

I still think there are many missing puzzle pieces, which I suspect will not be revealed.

Boat, sorry SHIP "commander." Not Navy Commander in rank. In this case is it BOAT?
None of this is "awe inspiring." These two ships should have never been taken in the first place.

Navy ships are commissioned "USS NAME," with designation and hull number. Boats have hull numbers and designations, sometimes names, but not USS. I am sure if these boats were named and commissioned ships, we would have seen the names included in headlines. Just feels worse when you see a ship's name, because forever after that, the ship's history is linked to the incident or accident or attack. USS PUEBLO. USS COLE. USS FORRESTAL. USS ARIZONA. These riverine boats will go back into service, and go on about their business.

Just a small thing, did not intend to sidetrack main gist of thread.

And yes, the Army does have more boats than the Navy.

Edit: Now I am curious and will do my due diligence in Jane's.

In the Coast Guard, a vessel over 65ft long is a cutter and is named.

Commanding officer (CO) or officer in charge might be used.

I knew USCG had different usage.

To non-sea service folks, though, and the eyes of the world, it's a Navy ship. Sigh.

Isn't it also true that ships are sovereign territory, while boats are just a manner of conveyance? I seem to recall from my Aircrew mission commander boards that a ship's captain can grant asylum, but a plane commander cannot, and his plane can be subject to boarding.

Now I would have to call on my Navy JAG friends! There are legal distinctions that relate to commissioned status of a ship.

US Government property (floating vessels of some kind) were boarded and held by another country. US Military personnel were detained and propagandized. There are some reports that they confiscated US property (GPS units). The Washington DC spin machine is in full cycle. The "facts" are so outrageous that we have to assume we don't have the full story.

There was no armed conflict but its clear that the Iranians won the propaganda battle.
