Is getting an interview always a good sign?

    Hi,

I applied early action to the Coast Guard Academy for the class of 2020, but I never set up an interview to go with my application. After visiting CGA for Bears Day, however, my application officer told me to ask to schedule one, which I did. This past week, I was contacted by a Coast Guard Academy partner to schedule an interview. Does this mean that I have been wait listed, or is this a good sign?

    Thanks everyone!

Getting an interview is a positive sign. Going to Bear's Day is a positive sign. Being wait listed is a good sign.

An interview is purely optional on the part of the candidate. However, the AO must have thought you would interview well, thereby suggesting the interview.

I always tell candidates, if they feel they are well spoken and will interview well, it can help their application to opt for an interview and they do well. If the candidate thinks they would not interview well, an interview can also hurt the candidate's application if they choose to interview and it doesn't go well. However, choosing NOT to participate in the interview process will not be used against a candidate in any way.

Do a search and you will come up with many sample questions and advice. And for God's sake... Don't refer to the interviewer by his/her first name. (Just happened today....twice)

My daughter searched all those questions and prepared for them. The admissions rep didn't ask her any of them and instead asked about things that were on her application. We had thought that the point of the interview was to glean knowledge about a candidate that wasn't on the application.

Yep, should have asked for things not on the app (although they don't often see the apps). Remember admissions partners are volunteers, some good some not as good.

So my son has not requested an interview and he applied EA. if he is not admitted by the end of December he plans to request an interview. He is a personable kid and would enjoy the process. Trust the process right?

I believe that if he applied EA, all the notifications will be complete by 12/24. If you apply EA, I do not think they will look at your application again in the general pool. An interview,at this point, might not be available.

Shoot for the Moon is correct. EA does not roll over to regular action for almost all applicants (haven't gotten an 100% answer on this issue but for most applicants this seems to be true.)
