Is it normal to be nervous/scared to attend a service academy? It was a dream come true when I received my appointment, but now I'm apprehensive about leaving home for I-Day. I realize that I'll get to come home during the year, and call/Skype, but I'm still scared to leave my family and friends. If you have any advice, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

It's normal. You'd have it to some degree with any college. With the challenges you'll be facing at the academy I'm sure the apprehension gets heightened. You'll be fine. Focus on preparing yourself. Your parents prepared you for this and it's time to start flapping your wings. Once you jump in the water will be fine. Sorry to mix the metaphors.

Yes, it is normal.

I was so nervous on I-day that I puked before going driving to the academy. Not a recommended technique; although I did feel better afterwords!

I went to Air Academy High School...
My father was the commander of the AF Academy Hospital...
We had sponsored 4 cadets in the class of 1979 (LWCB!)
I went to Northwestern Prep...

I was SCARED!!!

And yet it worked out okay...except for having three high school classmates that were in the class of '82...and knew I was there in '83...THAT was not fun...
