Is it possible?

What is a competitive state? We live in Pennsylvania and my daughter has been taking all Honors and AP classes since she started high school and has gotten straight A's since she started school. She is number one in her class and has been since she started high school. Her SAT scores are Math 690, Writing 690, and Verbal 680. I am so confused about all of this and I am going crazy waiting to hear if she gets an appointment to the Air Force Academy. I know, I know, patience is a virtue, but I am not very patient. So my question is, what is a competitive state and is Pennsylvania competitive and how many other applicants are from Pennsylvania? Sorry for rambling.

And just in case you really did mean competitive state some states are historically more competitive depending on the academy of choice…

First off let me get this out there… ALL the academies are VERY selective schools to get into… there it’s out of the way… :thumb:

Now competitive state can mean a few things… it could just mean more applicants from your region apply to a certain academy… For instance my DS is in Co 5th district and if you’re wondering that’s that same district the AFA is in ! So you would get a lot of young men and woman applying to AFA and less so (but not by much the Springs is a huge military town with 2 AF bases used to be 3 and 1 Army base) for the other academies…

It can also mean education wise as well… Just like anything we rack and stack high schools and educations across the nation so you have some states Connecticut, Massachusetts, California just to name a few (Colorado I think is 15th) so you would expect they produce more applicants for what the academies are looking for.

I hope that helps and by the way you’re a lurker after my own heart:thumb: resurrecting a 2 year old post... good on you for taking the time to do a little digging here!

Stephanie- I don't want to sound rude, so please understand that anything I say is meant to be helpful. You should be careful when saying that the intensity of your classes has brought down your GPA. Now, I know that your course-load was/is extremely difficult. I was in the same boat as you (and still will be until I graduate high school in May); however, when you attend the Academy your course load will probably be just as hard if not harder considering the other factors of the 4/c year.

Now, for the happy part of this. I think that your extra curriculars are very well developed. It shows that you have been involved in a lot of different groups. Maybe you should consider dropping one or two clubs though in order to devote more time to classwork. I work and do track, just those two things alone consume most of my free time. I have found with some of my harder classes (like AP Calc and AP Physics) that I can get a much better grade by focusing more on the class and less on the ECs. This has worked for me, but it might not be possible for you to drop clubs. I just thought I'd give you my opinion on the situation.

I think you are PERFECTLY capable of raising your GPA and SAT scores if you work hard. Just know that it requires an INCREDIBLE amount of hard work. But trust me, it pays off. I am thankful for every fun event I have had to miss in order to get me where I am now. Focus on where you want to be in two years and you will be able to do it! I think I can speak for all of us on this forum when I say you can do it!

Thank you all for catching competitive "STATE" instead of "SLATE". I guess I was so overwhelmed with a 2 year old thread becoming "BORN AGAIN", I didn't quite read the words properly. mike...

I feel a bit like a ditz for not checking the dates that it was sent. And apparently I missed that part of your post Christcorp. hehe. oops.
