I think there are several, but you will find that basically the same topics get discussed in every place there is an opportunity, so it is really a matter of how many times you want to read about the same subjects. There also used to be a private 'forum' that only permitted parents/friends of current mids to participate in where the impression was given that all sorts of 'secret/inside' info would be shared. Frankly it was just a rehash of the things being posted publically here and the good thing is that you get to hear from a wide variety of participants, since this is never a 'one size fits all' type of experience.
You will also find that some groups don't allow for discussion/disagreement or stating of opinions, which to me is exactly what these types of forums are useful for.
Though this forum is great it is different from FB pages and not just a rehash:
This Forum:
Positives:
alot of application information
occasional mid (IE: neusis) and recent graduate (IE: Hurricane) answer questions
Great for historical perspective
Great for global perspective
Political/ideological/ theoretical conversation welcome and encouraged
Negatives:
If you dont pose your question exactly right this forum can turn nasty!
And while some posters are very supportive, some responses are just unpleasant so posters can be intimidated. It does not have as much current up to date information.
FB:
This has the current up-to-date gouge. What color sneakers can you wear this year? (bright and loud is fine). What is the new tattoo policy? (should be released in a few wks). How many tickets are left for the Army/Navy Hockey game? (less than 100). There is lots of pictures. It is extremely positive. Political/ideological/ theoretical conversation unwelcome and discouraged. No application help, less historical perspective, less information on AF and Army.
The biggest help for incoming 2018s is the listserve that you can ask to join. It is run by a mom of (I think) four graduates. She is so helpful and kind. A blessing really. (it is a crazy crazy crazy amount of emails so be warned) The listserve emails now are only once per wk. However, over plebe summer and the start of the year they are very very frequent but very very helpful. For example, we were walking around lost looking for the Navy Federal Credit Union (tucked away by midstore). I posted on the listserve asking where the bank was. Within a couple of minutes there were responses of exactly where it was an even where the closest branch near our house is.
