ive heard people talk about principal and slate nominations and such but I am not 100% sure what it means.

I received a letter today from my congressman saying "I have nominated you to the Naval Academy".

Does this mean I am nominated? or am I simply on a slate and still competing for a nomination?

thank You,
Nick

You have a nomination, not an appointment.

You have received one of his 10 nominations.

You are still competing for an appointment from the USNA.

Nick, "slate" refers to the ten individuals nominated by that MOC. They may nominate ten for each open slot they have at the academies. You are on a slate of nominees, competing for an appointment.

How do you know?

Actually, you are competing against a few thousand. Unless you are a MOCs principal nomination or the candidate with the highest WCS (whole candidate score)on a ranked slate then you can and will be placed into the national pool with all of the other nominees.

Perhaps this might help.

Nominations average around 5,000 each year.

Of those 5,000,approximately 2,000 of them will be 3Q.

Of those 2,000 that are 3Q and have a nom, 75% (around 1,500) will get appointments.
