My DS recieved in the mail today a letter from USNA stating that he was guaranteed an offer of an appointment IF the following criteria was met by January 31, 2014: nomination . The letter was also sent to both senators in our state and our congressman. It stated several times in the letter that he was "guaranteed an offer of appointment".

That, sir, is an LOA. I assume your DS has already been through DoDMERB and is medically qualified, or that the letter also contained words about being medically qualified.

That is the ultimate Golden Ticket. Congratulations. Next hurdle is DoDMERB. They can be a problem but usually rectified, with waiver submissions. Good Luck.

It is the golden ticket BUT you must get a nom. PLEASE PLEASE understand that YOU need to get one. In the past 3 years, I've had more than 5 candidates (total) with LOAs without noms. Every one received a turndown.

Do NOT assume USNA will "find" you a nom. It used to happen but now almost never does. So definitely give 100%+ to securing a nom and THEN you have the golden ticket (assuming medical OK).

NOM and a successful interview with MOC and Senator along with DoDMERB pass and LOA is great. As 1985 says you still need that Nomination. Do your best at the interview. Don't rely on that letter. It means nothing without the Nomination or USNA Waiver.

    MJM,

Congrats to your son and your family! When DS received his USNA LOA, suddenly all the weight of anticipation, worry, and doubt lifted off his shoulders (and his parent's shoulders!).

As others have said, receiving a LOA is great, now you need to make sure he meets all the requirements listed in the LOA. It is a day he and your family will never forget if he receives the blue binder that has his appointment certificate in it.

DS just finished Plebe Summer, so our journey has only begun in earnest. I'm not sure my heart will make through the four years at the Academy. It bursts with pride on an ongoing basis. I Day - cool. PPW - cooler. Reform and use of cell phones - priceless.

I pray your family gets to enjoy the process of one's child becoming a USNA Midshipman. I have never encountered such joy as watching my son, in his summer whites, hug my wife (with her crying with joy, relief, and pride).

Congrats on the LOA. Oh friend, you haven't seen anything yet!

    LOA Timing

Does anyone know the typical amount of time it takes to hear about an LOA once an applicant has all their application complete? Our DD is waiting on her 11th grade english teacher recommendation -- who switched schools this year and is proving difficult to get a response from. The rest of her application, including medical, is complete.

It is rare to get an LOA so the typical time frame when one would typically hear about an LOA is never.

mjm, Congrats! Although the LOA letter has been cc'd to MOC, I would still have your son notify MOC that he received an LOA.

bennington1, teacher recommendations are very important. I think the board waits for recommendations before having a meeting to decide on LOA. My DS knew that his math teacher was leaving the school so he got his personal email address before school year ended. His English teacher was gone out of country most of the summer, and she lost the email sent from USNA and DS had to have the email re-sent. But don't worry, my DS still received an LOA at the end of Sept or beginning of Oct.

@Team Mom.. thank you for the advice.. I will have him do that.

In regards to DS stats.... he was not a recruited athlete. I asked if he minded giving his stats and he did not want me to put them on the internet.

I am incredibly grateful but also know that he needs to work very hard to obtain the nomination. He understands it is not "done" until the Appointment is in hand.

    MJM,

Our DS(2014) received his LOA approx 5 weeks after completing everything but Physical and Nom. He completed his app on 23-Jun and received LOA on 1-Aug. He received his DoDMERB info on 6-Aug. Took his physical and eye exams on 9-Aug. DoDMET reviewed results and sent to DoDMERB on 13-Aug. On 16-Aug, DoDMERB issued "DD2368: Status Letter-Status...QUALIFIED". He has completed his Nom applications and is awaiting interviews by MOC. I Believe the MOC has until January 31st to make their selection.

Hope this helps all who are reading the forum....
