DD received this letter yesterday, is this an LOE?

"I reviewed your application for admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The information you provided indicates that you are the type of competitive and accomplished person who will thrive on the unique blend of programs we offer. I encourage you to discover if West Point is the right college for you.

Major XXXX is your personal representative in the admissions process here at West Point. All candidates who are Academically, Physically, and Medically Qualified and have at least one nomination are considered for admission. If you have any questions about the remainder of your application process, Major XXX is your personal representative.

I highly recommend that you visit West Point to see the Academy first-hand and talk with cadets and faculty. There is no better way to Jearn about the unique aspects of a West Point education and an Army career. Cadet-escorted candidate orientation visits are available Monday- Friday, September- May, when classes are in session.
To schedule your visit, call the Admissions Office at 1-845-938-5760, at least two weeks prior to the date you plan to be here.

Since this letter is sent only to outstanding candidates deserving of adm ission, your accomplishments to date should be a source of special pride to your and to your family. With this letter, I am authorizing you for an Overnight Visit which is reserved for our most competitive candidates. I wish you the very best in your pursuit of an appointment to West Point."

DD was QNS last year, is attending a private university and is enrolled in Army ROTC.

Don't know if its an official LOE, but it's certainly a letter that would encourage me. I would do the overnight visit if at all possible, unless, of course, your daughter did one last year.

Thanks. She was not invited last year, but has made 2 visits there in the past, 2010 & 2012. She is going to school in Boston, the only challenge is minimizing lost class time. Hopefully spring break for WP and her school on are on different weeks.

Yes that's an LOE. Sounds exactly like mine from last year.

    LOE

WIT84, Congrats to your DD! That is an official LOE! By all means she should take advantage of the opportunity if her desire is to attend WP. She can make up the work at the traditional college she is attending. :thumb:

I too received the same letter. I am sort of confused though as the letter states that I am "authorized for an overnight visit" but does not provide details as to when/how that will be scheduled.

What's LOE stand for? I didn't find it on the acronym list. I only saw LOA. Are they the same?

    LOE = Letter of Encouragement.

To schedule, you'll need to call the number in the letter. There is not a set day for it - it's from available days at your convenience. I'd shoot for a Thursday - Friday on a football weekend and then see if you can find tickets for a home football game.

Not quite, the LOE is not binding like an LOA is but is certainly an indicator of your competitiveness. As for the visit, you schedule it yourself.

This is the key phrase to know if a letter is a LOE: 'With this letter, I am authorizing you for an Overnight Visit.....'
Overnight visits are offered with a LOE.

    Interpretation of LOE

I received a LOE last weekend and wanted to know if someone that got one last year got in easier or what the meaning is behind the LOE. Also, How many were sent out? My dad, brother, and uncle all graduated from the Naval Academy and never received a letter like this. Any response would be appreciated as I am very naive to West Point and their ways.

The meaning of the letter, is just what the last letter in the acronym says: encouragement. Applying to the military academies is a long and difficult process. One typically doesn't get an appointment until March or April. The letter is sent to those that they think they would like to have attend the academy to basically tell them to hang in there on the process (and don't just accept the other school). However, it doesn't make it any easier. Everyone has to become 3Qed and get a nomination to get an appointment. LOE or not. It's possible someone can get an LOE but still lose the competition on their slate. They may, or may not, then get picked off the wait list. But it's certainly no easier. It's still a long difficult grind.
