January 15th Letter

Did your DS complete his application in time to be eligible for EA? If not then I don't think they will get an answer today. If he did then you should hear something today. If I remember correctly from last year I think they were released throughout the day.

Yes he was EA and has completed everything (DODMERB, CFA, etc). I would just like him to hear something so he can relax a bit.

I was deferred as well. My nomination still has not been uploaded into my file and I received it in early December. I know I have to remain patient, but it has me a little worried that it has been almost a month and a half since I was awarded my nomination but my status still says "none". Is anyone elses nomination taking a little while to show up in their portals? Thanks, and goodluck to everyone else who recieved a deferral as well.

Our DS had a principal nomination. We live in Colorado and he received his BFE on February 7. He is in the class of 2016, the smallest class since the late '60s. Do not get worked up in this EA. Focus your energy on your final semester of HS and stay in shape.

FutureCadet58,
Don't know if this helps, but I submitted a request for Presidential nom forever ago and still has not been loaded...I have heard that anyone who qualifies gets it, so don't know what's up with that.

My son received his appointment on January 9th, and it was a complete surprise, since I had read of so many deferrals in the EA program. I had already prepared my son to expect a deferral letter.......the day before he received his appointment! My only advice for all candidates and parents that are still waiting for an answer, [I know this is now easy for me to say this] try and concentrate on other things and not spend much time on this forum. It only adds to the stress level. I'm glad I only found this forum the day before my son received his appointment, any sooner and I would likely have had a mild stroke! However, I will continue to visit the forum as it is a good source for info and to communicate with other parents of USAFA cadets, and parents of future USAFA cadets. This was a long process, and best wishes to all that are still waiting.

Remember, maybe 15% of all candidates are members here. Honestly, that might even be high. Usually the appointment list on this site is about 10% of the incoming class.

I honestly would not put too much into it.

Additionally, jmpo, but I think most candidates while in the process do not understand the finesse of the appointment process (charging).

You can have your paperwork in by Nov 1., but if just 1 candidate on yourMOC slate did not submit for the EA, than the MOC cannot be charged. The other issue is the fact that MOCs do not need to submit their slate until January 31st.

I am not a fan of this EA process, but that doesn't matter. Like Christcorp aka Mike stated, they never stopped the rolling process. Once every candidate on the MOC slate has a WCS they can charge the MOC, until that time, that charge is in play and every candidate has until end of Feb. to submit their final paperwork....IE a CFA can hold up the charging for the MOC. That in turn can hold up the EA, because they don't know which of the candidates that submitted for EA will go to the national pool.
~ They can get a clue from historical data if they without a doubt would be appointed off the national.

Before freaking, realize USAFA is the stingiestfor LOAs and I am willing to bet my beloved Myrtle after watching this process twice, that this impo is basically a different version of their LOA.
So...if one of the 10 candidates on the MOC's slate doesn't have everything in, the rest CAN'T hear until all 10 kids have their stuff in? Just trying to clarify.
Now I am beginning to understand why the process takes so long. It seems very complicated!

No! They can be appointed, but CANNOT be charged to the MOC (principal is the caveat). That is the finesse issue. It becomes even harder for states where MOCs do not talk. They may have also decided that a candidate that only had 1 nomination and the MOC did principal would have in their mind been the top of the national pool.

NC when our DS applied did not talk. He had all 3 MOC noms. Imagine how hard it would be for them trying to juggle all of those noms. and the EA if 2 from Sen.A had 9 that did EA. Sen. B had 9 too, but diffent. Every Congressmen had 9 too that now overlapped with the Senators.
~ Basically because slates overlapped they are at a standstill.

Can't charge candidate Smith from Senator Jones and Congressman Garcia slate if candidate Thomas has not been boarded. Can't charge candidate Jane either. Instead, you have to look at the national pool. Do you offer an appointment or wait until March?

This has always been my description for the appointment process.

Go and have a friend buy a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Do not see what the puzzle looks like. Now do it!
~ Chances are you will start with the corners.
~~ Those are your LOAs
~ Next will be edges
~~ Those are you EA
~ Next you are looking at those 4 sided pieces that may fit in several places, but not just right
~~ Those are your multiple nominations.
~ Finally, you are at the final pieces
~~ The national pool.

Right now they are just starting to work on the inner pieces.

Hey, thanks a lot for the input. I guess it is the constant waiting has made me worried, I am sure you understand what waiting can do to you. Yes, I have a principal nom and was told I would be good to go for class of 2019, but I can't help to still be worried. I suppose I am 3Q, but I have a 570 on my reading SAT and their competitive "guidelines" suggest a 580 and above on reading. I just have to wait it out, I suppose (waiting is the hardest part).

As for you, I am sure you will get your appointment! You seem like a great candidate, best of luck to you. If all works out we will be classmates next year! :)

My son is at school and has not checked his portal yet. We have the email and know a message is waiting. He wants to check after school as he has exams today and doesn't want to be thrown off. My only comment thus far is that it doesn't seem encouraging that there is not a single report of an appointment today. I'm thinking that if you didn't already receive your appointment that today is a notice of deferral for everyone else.

DS was deferred as well today (USAFA).
DS received LOA USNA and is hearing he should be getting BFE anyday now from USNA.
USAFA seems to do things differently...

Thanks! I really like this visual aid.

I guess the bright side of not getting selected for EA is that you may get more offers between now and April from different institutions, and this can give you longer time to decide which SA/college you want to attend since you won't be locked into the March 15th decision date.

FutureCadet58, I sent you a Private Message.

Since the letter of deferment mentions improving our application for the time being until around March, does that mean till January 31st? Also, will USAFA accept updated grades throughout the semester, as it mentioned on the letter of deferral?

I read of how many recieved a letter of defferment earlier this morning and wondered why I had not heard of whether I got deffered or appointed. Well, I waited, checked my portal throughout the day and saw the appointment message around 2 this afternoon! I'm thrilled to be a part of the class of 2019 and cant wait for June 25th! I also wish the best for everyone that has been deferred! Keep your heads and grades up and don't stress over it too bad!

Not sure I agree wholeheartedly falconchic88. My suggestion would be continue to train (physically), and don't do anything stupid.

Iows, no senior it is and don't do stupid stunts where you can risk bodily damage....ski, but maybe this is the year you decide that doing a double daffy off of mogul is not a smart decision! Same with doing something stupid at the prom or a graduation party that can get you in trouble.
~ The bubble wrap joke exists for a reason!

The altitude at USAFA can take a few days to get accustomed to, thus continue to train so even if your scores drop upon arrival, you won't be at the bottom.
