January 4, 2011 AROTC Board

Just another stalker dad making a first post. My DD has applied AROTC and is anxiously waiting for the results of the second board. She wants to be an Army Nurse and has applied to several competitive nursing schools, which I'm hearing get approx 1000 applications for around 150 freshman slots in the program. She was passed over on the first AROTC board, but has received encouragement from the ROO at one of her schools that she is looking strong for the second board. Her stats are: 620M/590CR on SATs, 24 ACT, 3.8W GPA, 2 AP and many Honors classes, Senior Captain of three varsity teams (soccer/track/basketball), second chair violin in school orchestra and solist in choir, Honor Society secretary, church youth group leader, and certified youth soccer referee in her spare time on weekends. She did excellent on her PFT and was also was sent to DODMerB after the first board and is medically qualified. She has tasked me with keeping up on when results come out, since she is too busy to stalk like me. This is all new to our family and has been a learning experience as we have walked through this with her and discussed the commitment. Good luck to everyone waiting!

Wondering if anybody has any insight or experience with this question....

My son recently found out he was passed over for the 1st AFROTC board and will be reviewed again on the 2nd board. He has also applied to the AFA, is qualified on all counts and has received a nomination from our area Rep. His portal status is "candidate". His resume is strong in some areas, not-so-strong in other areas.

Does the fact that he was passed over on the 1st AFROTC board mean the "handwriting is on the wall" for not receiving an appt to the AFA and he should start focusing on Plan B (or C)? Any insight/advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello All,
I too am a stalker of these forums, but I am an AROTC hopeful myself. My top 4 schools are Northeastern, University of Vermont, University of Colorado Boulder, and Universtiy of Wisconsin Madison. I've been accepted to all except Wisconsin Madison.
3.1 GPA with 3 AP and several honors classes. (Didn't get in gear until midway through sophomore year :bang: )
SAT- 640M/750CR/610W
ACT- 29 Comp with 36CR 26M 28Sc 25W

How did you all get a DoDMERB packet already? I'd like to get it out of the way asap.
I wish all prospective cadets the best of luck, saving a little for myself

The trouble with all of this is who really knows?!? The great thing about this forum is that others can help encourage us as we wait and see.

I think you hit the nail on the head paradoxer! :thumb:
Such a blessing to have feedback come back like that though!
Good Luck :groupwave:

Wow, so excited everyone else wanted a thread like this...January will be a long, cold month in Ohio and having somewhere to talk and possibly vent, will help sooo much! Also, my friends and family are completely at a loss over this whole process so its great to have people who know as much, and even more, than I do to kick it around with.

Oh, does anyone know how they picked the prospectives that go DodMERB packets before the scholarships were offered? I saw a few ideas in the previous post, but the power that be sure threw us all a curve ball and makes the waiting and wondering a little bit harder.

Glad to see some actual prospective cadets on here too. DS reads/lurks when he has time, but he's staying pretty busy with scouts, student senate and the other stuff (his girlfriend...) so I think it helps him get away from it. Unfortunately for me, my job slows down this month (retail) so I have way too much time on my hands....

anyhow, keep checking back, ClarksArmy is good to his word, I've seen him post on all the previous boards I've read and he'll let us know when the results start coming in....

take care:wiggle:

Any insight/advice is appreciated.
Well...since you said any...and you're asking in a primarily Army ROTC thread...I'll give it a shot.

I would not base your son's chances of gaining an appointment to the USAFA on being passed over by the first AFROTC board. My son knows a C4c at the USAFA that did NOT receive an AFROTC scholarship last year. Considering that my son is a senior in HS (and a USAFA candidate) he doesn't know many cadets there and there could be quite a few that received appointments and didn't receive an AFROTC scholarship at ALL last year....let alone just passed over by one board. Supposedly it will be at least as difficult to receive an AFROTC scholarship this year. If your son is fully qualified and has a nom, then I think he has reasonable chance of receiving an appointment. It's still early....don't give up hope! :thumb:

I am an AROTC hopeful myself from Rhode Island who has been accepted at The Citadel and Norwich, this is my first review board. Good Luck to all applicants!

I didn't make first board, but all hope are in this one.
I have a 24 ACT, 3.8 GPA unweighted....4.5 weighted, class rank 20th out of 500 in my school. Varsity mens volleyball captain for 2 years... State Champions, Mens tennis captain 2 years, Club Volleyball 6 years and captain... 2008 Junior Olympic Bronze Medal, 3 year National Honors Society Member, Church youth leader, Numerous volunteer service hours, 2 jobs (lifeguard and Ice cream parlor) for the last 2 years.

Anyways I am planning on majoring in Biochemistry/Biology or Biblical Studies. I have applied an been accepted to several schools. My top choices are however 1. Liberty University......2. University of Central Oklahoma.... 3. Baylor University

I was informed I was boarded for the January board although I turned in credentials after the 20th deadline - which was a relief. Looking to go to IU - absolutely love the school and program and study poli sci, criminal justice, or a degree that I can pursue a future in military intelligence.

FWIW: Here is a quote from an AF PMS at a large AFROTC program I have been emailing back and forth with; "There’s precious little scholarship money available right now. In fact, most of our cadets are not on scholarship ... they just want to be Air Force officers. Still, each year we typically award a scholarship to one freshman and one sophomore. He could compete for those; "

January 5th

Hey everyone...a new day, one less to wait. DS emailed his #1 school's ROO last night, they may have an overnight visit later this month at OU and he is hoping the results will come in that week (Friday, 21.1.11) so he can be with the "guys" when he hears. DS stayed over with the AROTC back in October there too and has kept in touch with a few guys/gals. I just hope we hear something before 1.2.11, last year the results came out over a period of a few days (like 29.1.10 - 3.2.10) that would make me CRAZY! Anyway, back to catching up on all the cleaning and stuff I let go over December - Christmas tree is down, laundry caught up but no rest for the wicked.

take care :wiggle:

Hello y'all. I completed my packted late November and have been waiting for January 4th since. I'm attending University of Southen Mississippi as a Chemistry Major in the fall. Hopefully  as a scholarship cadet! I had DoDMERB "fun" early summer for Academy applications so I already know I will need to request a waiver should I receive an AROTC scholarship. Best of luck to everyone on the site, I hope we can all receive the good news this board, no one likes waiting.

Daunting isn't it that as you work around the house someone could be deciding this very minute on whether a scholarship letter will be soon arriving at your house.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly for them and the scores get assigned so the next phase starts promptly. My DS has already been boarded at the October one so as I understand it, his file has been scored and now waits for the January files to be scored (this week) and the decision of who gets scholarship offers and to which schools takes place after all files submitted by 20.12.10 are scored. Cleaning, need to do more cleaning...less thinking more scrubbing.....

Same #1 school choice

Hey Justin777,
My DS top school choice is Liberty University as well. Looking at a major of International relations / strategic intelligence. ACT score 25 w/ 3.2 gpa, (school doesn't rank). Also has a lot of volunteer & work hours. Active in sports (got lettered, but not captain or on varsity. DS also didn't get first selection board, (obviously) , and has gotten DodMERD qualified this December.
I asked the ROO @ Liberty if any scholarships were given out to his school the first board, they said they didn't.
It's interesting that this is the case... wonder if this is a good sign for us this next board. Hmmmm?
Good luck to you! (P.S. please pass on any info you may get from Liberty way.)

I said that kinda' goofy, sorry about that

Best of luck to you! Can't wait to hear good news!

Well im not actually sure if i have anything. I have talked to the recruiting officer a Liberty several times, but it was really over stuff like education delays for med school and such... which is quite far away. I also talked to him about the average apft score at the school, so i could judge myself in comparison. Now if it helps at all, he said the average junior cadet gets around a 270 on the apft. Also we talked about what majors would probably be best for a scholarship... which were technical fields so i changed to biochemistry. Also some schools will pay for room and board... in which my other 2 choices do, but Liberty doesnt pay for room and board...only tuition and fees. Did you DS go to a college for a weekend or visit the detachment?

January 6th

Good morning everyone. Glad to see some posters finding common ground (jkcksoup & justin777 for instance) and sharing information as we count down to decisions being released. Justin777 was asking about staying overnight with your program on campus, how many others have had overnight visits? DS, as mentioned, has had one with his 1st choice, 2nd choice is where his sister attends(non-ROTC). DS really felt drawn to OU's Bobcat's after hanging out with them in the dorms on campus - I'm really glad that they offered this type of visit!

Well, off to the job today - I work for Bath & Body Works, yeah, that ladies store with all the smelly soaps & stuff. So everyone have a great day!

Hi Clarkson,
Can you tell me if ROO's know the total of scholarships they are going to be able to have for the 2015 class....or do they get each number for their school board by board.
My son has been accepted to Vtech, The Citadel and Norwich. His first choice and (ED) is VTECH, but we are not sure how many scholarships they get from each board, and IF there are many slots left. He got the ELS scholarship for 3000 there, but we are out of state....yikes NH..He did the spend the night program down there last Feb...LOVED everything about the Corp....has wanted to be an Army Officer since he was a young boy, despite not ever giving him "cap guns" to play with...He LOVES this wonderful country and wants to help, protect and make it a better place for all....I want to see him live out his dream.
