January 9, 2012 AROTC Board

ROTC is a major on its own and throwing a heavy major into it is extremely difficult to both really well.

This is one of the reasons why USMA or an SMC may actually be easier in some respects than a civilian college, because all students are on the same footing in terms of the time they must devote to their military obligations on top of academics. And the professors usually understand that (still tough, though).

At a civilian school, in contrast, ROTC engineering/science majors sit in the classroom with students who don't have the extra burden of ROTC. And the grades at the end of the semester often reflect this.

Life is a zero sum game.

I think you are right with regards to the academies and some SMC's. At SMC's such as Texas A&M and Virginia Tech you are still competing academically with the civilian students.

Agree...I think its harder then the ROTC cadets imagine it to be. We shall see if Cadet lets him change his major or if my DS just toughs it out and sees if this semester is a little easier to manage. I don't think it's going to be. He has taken 3 years of Pashtu and is thinking if he can change his major to Arabic studies then he is going to do that. Anyone else having trouble with their ROTC cadet?

Pashtu!!!! Are you kidding? If DS really speaks/understands Pashtu and can do the same with Arabic...Al Qaeda is run by Arabs and their safe haven is the Pashtu speaking regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The military and ROTC in particular have a number of opportunities for developing language proficiency.

I would start looking at all aspects of Top Secret Security clearances.

I agree...especially if one is applying to ROTC as a back up plan to one of the service academies. A SMC would be the way to go.

I jut got a Dodmerb packet today, and it says I should contact my doctor within 5 days of receiving that packet? I'm guessing I should wait until I hear back from CC until I start thinking about Dodmerb exams?

No. Get busy and follow the instructions!

weird thing....DS is DODmerb qualified for USMA. He was passed over 1st board. Today he gets notification from DOD dated 1/12/12 that he is now ROTC qualified. It could just be a coincedence but it does make the heart race a little bit. time will tell.

mgguy.

SA and ROTC operate differently.

This is not uncommon for SA candidates. USMA requested it, and now AROTC requested it. Since he was qual'd from DodMerb, he is now qualified. It is more about the queue than anything else.

It just means he is now in a new pile.

Same news here

DS was sent back last summer for Physical for when he applied to USNA Seminar but just today rec'd a letter in the mail from DoDMERB saying he was USNA and Army ROTC Qualified.

OK, I'm a little confused now as well. First off, let me say that my daughter is an MSII in AROTC. When she went thru thr process, they didn't send you any DoDMERB paperwork until after they scholarship was offered. That made total sense to me because why would they (the govt) want to pay for all these physicals/eye exams if the kid wasn't even going to be offered a scholarship.

Fast forward a couple years and my son is in the process but has NOT been offered any type of scholarship yet. He is also NOT as applicant for any of the academies. However, we received the initial DoDMERB paperwork from Concorde Medical in the mail today. Of course, we get it done ASAP but I'm just wondering if the process has completely changed or is this possibly a good sign??

Either way, I know better than to get my/our hopes up as we're experts in the waiting game...especially as it relates to getting a medical waiver in teh process. Talk about stress!!

There were several folks last year who got their DoDMERB paperwork prior to being awarded a scholarship. Some were awarded and some weren't (as I recall anyway). DOn't know if they were mixups or what. In any case, I think staying calm and not reading anything into it is the wise course.

kinnem is correct about not reading too much into the Dodmerb packet.

I have a MS4 and a MS1 in school right now, the MS4 did not receive any paperwork until he was offered a scholarship. Last year the MS1 was lucky enough to receive the scholarship on the first board, the Dodmerb packet soon followed. Between the first and second board a lot of applicant were sent the Dodmerb packet. We were told that applicants that were deemed competitive were sent the paperwork and instructed to have the physicals completed. As kinnem said, some of these applicants received scholarships and some did not.

Having the Dodmerb cleared and out of the way early helped cadet command manage the flow of offers, they had a better idea of how many scholarships to award in the later boards because they could now see who was Dodmerb qualified and who was not.

Right now receiving a Dodmerb packet basically eans that the applicant is competitive, that in itself is a good thing. Undoubtably there will be more competitive applicants then offers available.

Having the Dodmerb out of the way will also help the cadet time wise if they choose a plan B such as SMP, it will also help if and campus scholarships become available once the cadet starts school.

Good luck everyone, I certainly understand the stress of waiting, we've goe through it over and over for the last 4 years, it never really stops.

commonsense58 --

have you spoken with the LT in charge of freshmen in the San Diego NROTC Consortium ... last year it was LT Brandon Luizer. I would be really surprised, and pleased for your DD, if there are still openings in the SD Unit's allotment of 34, or whatever the number is this year. Last year they pretty much filled up by the end of October. If it is not the most popular Unit in the country, it is certainly among the top 3. I have always read that the most popular units fill up in October or soon thereafter. In your case of course I hope I am mistaken.

Still no news

No news here for AROTC scholarship...anyone here or see anything yet?

Not yet! I know that DS is checking every day, possibly multiple times. But I don't really expect to hear anything yet.
