Joining the Academy

If you cull out all the back and forth posturing, I think there is a great opportunity to create a collective summary of advice for middle school students that could eventually become a sticky.

Thanks for the information on the S.A.M.E. camp. I will be checking it out.

FYI: ALOs are typically busy with their real jobs and other duties. Most do this on the side as volunteers for the benefit of USAFA Admissions. Be patient if you don't hear from them right away. My DS's contact for AFROTC got deployed suddenly and a replacement was not found for several weeks.[/QUOTE]

Sami and I have a meeting set up for the ALO on August 12th.

OMG could we just stop the peeing contest?

Good on you for showing us...me up!

Come on you and I know.... CPT Johnson your post was aimed at me directly.

No biggiie to me. Like I said, I wish the best of all your DD deserves.

Have been grown?

Sorry Sami, but from a grammatical pov, I have been grown raised eyebrows with me. I worry that the SAT V s gong to be an issue is at 15

ETCERA, ETCERA, ETCERA.

We all make mistakes.

I don't want to witness a female peeing contest. That seems futile to me. :shake:

With that said, I simply read that CPT Johnson got an appointment w/ the local ALO officer. Nothing more, nothing less. :)

By all means post and ask questions as a parent, but don't tag team.

LMAO at this one…..tag teaming? Just like your husband Bullet does for you almost every time things get dicey on here?

(Caveat: I freely admit that this post, like so many others on this thread, does nothing to propel the original discussion forward. I just thought I’d join in the fun too!)

Guys I think every single one of us needs to just chill out. There is too much calling people out and what I would call "egging" on.

Just step away from the thread and even the forum for a day or two and let cooler heads prevail.

Its really not worth the mods whipping out the ban hammers and banning people for abuse of the terms.

Thanks Boozebin.

Everyone,
Please refrain from adding to this thread unless you have something positive to add that will help Sami in her quest.

I'm currently in South Florida visiting my Viper pilot so I don't have full access. Keep on the straight and narrow from now on and I won't have to unpack the hammer when I get home. Thanks for understanding.

I was an ALO for a number of years...gave it up due to schedule conflicts.

I rarely got the opportunity to talk to a youngster, see where they wanted to go, and point them in the right direction.

99% of the time the first time I heard about a student was when I had to interview them...and by then it is pretty hard to fix anything.

That is why I say to prospective applicants, find an ALO to talk to and get some one on one mentoring.

Yea ALOs have busy lives, but it is a nice change of pace to chat about the zoo, rather than write reports.

Captain Johnson

I would be very proud to have a daughter who aspires to serve this nation before she even enters high school. Sami - (I am confident )- is an amazing and outstanding young woman, who should be encouraged to pursue her desire to attend USAFA. I have sent you a private message, and I do hope that nobody on this forum has discouraged this remarkable young woman from continuing her path towards becoming a candidate for a service academy.
My hope is that there will be more young men and women (such as Sami) who will start the journey of preparation to enter the military service- with the courage, excitement, and initiative that this young woman has displayed already.

ALO meeting

We met with the ALO today. He had a lot of positive things to say. Sami starts school next Monday and is planning to participate in as many extracurricular activities as possible. He was also very encouraging with her interest in Civil Engineers, and attending the SAME camp.

Sami is starting early which is great because she can stay focused on making the right decisions to build a good application package.

I highly recommend the SAME camp. My DS always wanted to be a Civil Engineer. He is now a C4C at the Academy and the camp solidified his desire to become a Civil Engineer and attend the Academy. I think you can apply after the Freshman year in High School.

My DS is currently a C1C. The same is true of him He always loved playing with purpose in the dirt. He loved watching the Thunderbirds and knew in the 6th grade that USAFA was what he wanted.

He also credits the SAME camp for sealing his decision on Civil Engineering.
