The reg calendar indicates that June 16 is the last day of exams. DS begins sea duty on June 21. If we went up to Long Island, how much time would we get to spend with DS during that window? Thanks.

Do you mean he's been assigned a ship, has orders and travel documents? Just because they go on sea duty status does not mean they leave immediately on that day to report to their ship. DD went on sea duty status immediately after the Fall tri. She was released to wait at home and ended up with a 3-week vacation while waiting for her MSC paperwork to be processed and her orders to come through.

On the other hand, if you can get up to KP to pick their "stuff" for while they are at sea, that is a good idea. They can store things at KP; but they usually prefer, for a number of valid reasons, to have things stored at home, especially anything valuable or important to them.

KPMum2012, DS has no idea what his assignment will be. Factoring that in, is it worth planning a trip from FL for that period?

Things can change at the last minute. If you have to fly out, be prepared to not be able to see your son b/c his date of leaving might change last minute. I guess it all depends from where you fly or drive and the financial situation you are in. I don't mean to be a downer, but that can be a possibility. Our son was supposed to leave the next day after exams, but his shipmate's papers hadn't come in yet, so they were assigned a ship for a week later. That arrangement changed too w/in a course of 3 days. They finally were told to go home and they'd be contacted when to report. Home for 14 days, went back to KP, the shipping time/ship changed again, but they got hours on the Kings Pointer, which applied to their sea hours. It was quite the summer "Christmas break" for us.

Also be aware, that he will be required to attend the graduation activities. A list can be found on the parents website. He may not have much free time until 1100 on 21 June (after graduation). But, with that said, if you can get up there, watching a graduation is a fantastic thing. I went to graduation my son's plebe year and enjoyed every minute of it!!
