For I-Day, I made reservations at the Academy Hotel in April to make sure we had a room on 6/23. We went to the Rockies game the night before and got to the hotel around 10 PM. When I got there they told me they sold my room. They did make a reservation for us at another hotel about 20 miles away. I was not to keen on this but had to live with it. If you know you are definitely going to be there, I would recommend paying for it in advance so they don't sell your room.

Thanks for the warning to all. We had a bad experience there at Orientation as well. Great location, nice hotel, but the customer service (and I was dealing with a manager) was completely "Who needs you? We have people lining up to get your room." I wouldn't stay there again unless it was a situation like orientation where all the parents were staying there. And even then, I'd consider staying at the Drury across the street (which we've enjoyed in the past, and like the breakfast better) and just coming over to socialize in the evening.

I noticed they did not care much either. They felt they were doing me a favor by moving me to another location. Actually the place we stayed was nicer, The Cheyenne Mountain Resort, but I did not want to stay anywhere else. I wanted to be right there in the morning to make sure my son got to the Academy with no problems. It turned out fine, but you are correct, the customer service was aweful. We are staying at The Hampton Inn for Parents Weekend. I told my wife to pay ahead just in case.

We were on the bus to orientation when I realized I'd forgotten something in the room. I called and told the front desk (I'd checked out) and asked them to get it and keep it at the desk. They assured me no problem. When I went back at 5pm they had no idea of what I was talking about, someone else was in the room, and the person who controlled the lost and found was "off duty" and no one else (including the head manager!) could possibly open the room with the lost & found items inside. They kept asking why I really needed it (yes, I was flying out, be nice to have then) and ignoring me and helping others (lots of people making their PW or I Day reservations) who were obviously far more important in generating more income than in helping someone who'd already checked out.

The room guarantee (paying ahead) is a good idea no matter which hotel you are staying at for Parent's Weekend. Most of them will have in their policy that you must check in before 5 or 6 PM or your room will be released unless you have guaranteed the room.

Remember, there will be many parents arriving in town who have not had the advantage of parent's groups or forums to learn about room availablility for PW. Many will show up figuring "We'll just find a hotel when we get there". These will be the people who will get the rooms that are not held with a payment or credit card on file. The hotels know that they will have no-shows and will try to accomodate the new arrivals rather than letting a room sit empty.

As far as the Academy Hotel staff, I am sad to hear that you had bad service. We have stayed there many times and have always had super service. I hope they hear about it and take care of the problem.

I am not sure about any other hotels, but the HILTON hotels so long as they have your cc with your reservation...they hold your room until you get there...and if you don't show up and don't cancel your room by the time of day they say to (usually 4-6 pm 24 hrs in advance) they will charge your card for one day.

That's how I thought most hotel chains were. Maybe the BW was playing the odds that they could still sell the OP's room, and then if they didn't show up, still charge them for the room as well as a no show?
