Son just got invited to attend The Citadel's Scholarship Competition. However, we do have a vacation planned for that very weekend. Its not a vaca I can simply decide not to go on. Spoke with his admissions counselor, he HIGHLY suggested he definitely show up to this event. Here is the situation...

1. NJ resident
2. Eagle Scout
3. SLS attendee
4. Boys State attendee
5. Varsity athlete
6. 700 math 640 reading 640 writing
7. 3.7 GPA...AP course load
He has applied West Point, USNA, USCGA, AROTC-(Rutgers, Citadel, VMI, Penn State, Geaorgia Tech)

I've heard many things about the competition, such as, he will definitely walk away with something to he has an excellent shot at a full.

Does anyone have experience in regards to this event? If so, how should he prepare and should we postpone the vaca and lose a substantial amount of $$$? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

My son did this competition and while he ended up at VMI, he found it highly worth while. It did result in a money offer. Do it if you have any interest in the Cidadel.

DS attended the scholarship competition a couple of years back. In his year group they offered three competition dates. He attended the last one in March. One word of caution according to the information posted at the time, (this may have changed) scholarships were awarded as the board selected recipients. There was not an effort to have equal apportionment of scholarships to the various competition dates. So, it is conceivable that a great candidate may not get the same scholarship in March that he/she might have earned in January. Also, information posted that year stated that the goal was for the majority of full catalog cost scholarships to be offered to SC residents. When DS was at the competition he met several competitors with a 32+ ACT and similar stats as your son. Your son certainly has an excellent chance of receiving some type of scholarship. DS is not a SC resident, was a late Citadel applicant, last minute competition attandee and ended up with a full scholarship. So, the scholarships are out there. If your son is seriously interested in The Citadel. I would encourage participation in the competition. I think the first year out of state total expenses were a little over $40,000. Hope this helps.

I heard the same thing in regards to the 3 dates. He will be attending the first one in a month. If he receives a full, he will most likely commit immediately. He still has apps at USNA and WP as well as ROTC. He really is drawn to The Citadel.

As to preparation, DS had to write a short paper selecting one of three topics. During the competition there were small round table discussions, each round table had three scholarship competitors. The applicants discussed their papers and the other papers being presented with a panel watching and scoring their conversations. As I recall, the panel was looking for students who could bring depth to the discussion (not just a rote paper presentation, but analysis of all the papers being discussed).

Son just got back from Citadels scholarship competition. He feels he did very well and fell in love with the school. There were 30 students there and enjoyed every aspect of the competition including the actual open interview. Admissions says he will be made aware anywhere from 2 weeks to December 15th whether he is chosen for a full-ride scholarship. Keeping fingers crossed!! Any info in regards to what happens now would be appreciated. Anxious, as we all are on this site!!!

Did you DS hear anything about the scholarship at The Citadel? My DS is a knob (class 2016) this year and he received the full ride.

Do you have to be invited to do this competition? How come i cannot find anything about it on their website?

Glad to see you asking arctic. I was about to ask the same question on your behalf. You go buddy. :thumb:
