Are upperclass Midshipmen still authorized to wear the Khaki service uniform? I have heard rumors of them being phased out, so what is the current status?

    No we're not. It's awful. 2012 loses out again...:unhappy:(only a slight exaggeration)

MIDN wear khakis over the summer for summer school/YPs, detail (NASS and plebe summer), on cruise/PROTAMID, and internships. During the Ac year we can't wear them at all.

Just out of curiosity, why don't the mids wear khakis?

One of the classic things most military folks have an inside joke about is some variation of "if they can't change anything else, they can change the uniforms." The Naval Academy, following that classic tradition, will swing the uniform pendulum back and forth over the years. The leadership will have some theory behind the change...and a few years down the road, another set of leaders will espouse the opposite theory.

The Naval Academy, in a way, is a "brand," and will assess uniform choices in pursuit of the right look and feel of a uniform student body that presents a great impression to visitors and the outside world. There has been some tradition of the all-blue (black) uniforms at officer accession schools.

One more thing to say "Semper Gumby" about.

While Working Blues is a tradition at USNA, I think it's time we said goodbye to that uniform. (1) There is no Working Blues uniform in the Fleet anymore -- doesn't exist. (2) It's cost ineffective to make MIDN "buy" this uniform, for which they will completely throw away after graduation. When I was a plebe, we had to buy enlisted utilities (dark blue trousers and light blue blouse) to wear only during the "enlisted" 3/C cruise (a total of 3 weeks our of 4 years at USNA) -- what a waste of money -- it could have been used better elsewhere.

USNA could do well with the NWUs and Khakis for working uniforms and still have dress uniforms as Uniforms of the Day.

    Just my two cents.
