More curiosity than anything else….

How’s the food / dining service at USNA?

With the renovations to King Hall being completed last year... any improvements seen?

Any links in cyberspace to the daily / weekly menu?

Any and all comments are appreciated.

Thank you.

My Mid is a female who isn't big on starchy foods and fried meat. She has spent 4 years avoiding King Hall as much as possible. OTOH, most of her male companymates seem to think the food is fine. I ate in King Hall during 2/C Parents Weekend. There was plenty of food, and it was decent.

It has gotten better but you may want to see how bad it was with a search of previous discussions::biggrin:

I remember "Cod Dogs".

My mid says its 'ok'...Buffalo Chicken is the best and most popular...the alleged Greek food is not good at all...

I will find out how the food is on daily basis soon as a plebe but.....

ate there during CVW
ate there for NASS
are there during STEM of 2010

It is pretty good.

The food isn't bad, but it isn't great either, but there is always plenty of it. The food has improved over the years though and actually gotten healthier. King Hall does try to improve things from year to year with variety, healthier options, and removing items that Mids hate. Progress is slow and creating menus for 4,000 Mids to be served at once is a challenge. The worst time of year was first block summer school... the Plebes had not arrived yet and it we were often the test group for new possible food options or eating the surplus that was left over in the freezers. Heck after eating in field messes, T-rats, and MREs for months on end during deployments, King Hall would of looked amazing to us!

I remember "Cod Dogs".[/QUOTE]

As in 2006 when the DC paper showed a cartoon with a Mid outside the wall with a sign reading.."will serve my country for food!"

Hot Sauce makes everything taste better. Try cardboard rations without Hot Sauce. MRE's are gourmet meals.:yllol: If you had old C-3 and C-4. Although the fruit cup was great. Hold your Lucky greens from WWII staight out so the tobacco didn't run out. Vienna Sausage and crackers were great.

Food service WAS a disaster in the 2006-7 timeframe regardless of what some regulars on this forum at that time were saying. Some implied it was just the imagination of disgruntled mids when those posting such remarks actually had not current/accurate information of their own. Fortunately, most of those types are long gone from this forum. Part of the issue was the temporary kitchen during construction of the new facility as well as the fact the administration increased the number of mandatory meals without ever coordinating with the food service. There were several meals where insufficient quantities of food was prepared and they simply ran out and other times where what was served wasn't appealing to any of the mids. As others have mentioned, you can do a search on posts during that timeframe to get additional details.

Fortunately, those issues seem to now be in the past. I am not really sure why parents would want or need to know the daily menu. Probably best to ask current mids for their thoughts and/or talk with your plebe after they have been there past plebe summer once the entire brigade returns. Serving that large of a group presents some logistical challenges and tastes vary among those who are currently there.

Agree. Construction of King Hall was a major problem. From what I have heard it is much better after they stopped serving meals out of the tents. It WAS a disaster or it Wasn't? Were we wrong and have left the forum because we don't care anymore? It was long after 2007 when Firsties had to give up their food to feed Plebes at the table. Parents don't need the daily menue. Salad Bar and Quick meals should be enough. The food at that time was really bad no matter what you say about improvement. Really, really, really bad. We are still here and we still care. Even after graduation our "types" still care. By the way. What is a "type"? Was that a derogatory epithet subject to legal action! Just kidding.

You can eat anything with a lil' Mandango. 2 scoops of ranch and add 20 to 25 squirts of RedHot and mix together. Mandango can be added on top of anything and turn it into a 5 star feast. You think the academy food is bad wait until you get haze grey and underway! Best sea meal ever: tuna fish and crackers!

Try to eat meals at TBS. They will eat anything provided.:thumb:

I think your phrase is actually more applicable to those going through SERE school and less to Marines at TBS.
I would consider TBS meals 5 star compared to what is served/captured at SERE.

Time2 got it right. Add to the King Hall construction the new Supe's decision that 1/Cs would have fewer meals off the yard (meaning King Hall had to serve more than they'd budgeted for) and it was pretty miserable for a while. But apparently food is decent now.

As someone who had first hand experience of the food shortage, the quality wasn't really the issue (sure some of the meals weren't great, but that has always been a trademark of King Hall), it was purely the quantity. The issue originally went up the chain of command, yet no action was take, until, amazingly, the MOCs picked up the newspaper and gave someone a call. It is amazing how that process resolves change a lot quicker.

I feel sorry for those of you at NAVY now or in the recent past... the quality and quantity of food in King Hall has been disappointing the last 15 years or so. We used to have an occasional dud meal, but most of the food was very good and plentiful (except for the steaks). Holiday meals were feasts designed to distract us from the fact that we were at USNA, not at home for Thanksgiving, etc. Regardless, you will learn in short order which meals are better missed, but at least you have a better variety available in Dahlgren than we had in the Steerage under the Rotunda.

For what it is worth, I have had two kids in other colleges using the mandatory meal plan, and no one liked the food there either. It seems that complaining about the food is just embedded in the DNA.

SERE has to be the worst. Find it, kill it, and eat it. Wihout matches.
