"kings point harbor" (haven for cadets at sea)

Thank you ccmom

Great idea. In this economy, not everyone has a credit card, or if they do and they are unemployed, they may have it at its limit trying to make ends meet. Simply paying several hundred dollars and waiting to get reimbursed may not be an option for some mids/cadets. For me, it would lessen my worries if I knew my DS had some options while at sea even if only in case of an emergency!

You are appreciated for all of your efforts to make our kids feel "at home" away from home! Kudos to you! I know the cadets will enjoy a home away from home and there are many families/alums and relatives that are willing to helpl! Thank YOU!

Cookiecafemom, Your idea is a great one. Even though there might be a list already in place, I have a feeling that there are more than a few mids/cadets that do not know about it and revising it might not be such a bad thing. I whole-heartedly support you effort; in my personal email to you I specified that we are 2 1/2 hours from Oakland but will be there at a drop of a hat if need be!! Our DS is doing his first year at sea now, I would be forever thankful to a family that 'stepped up' if he were in need of assistance.
Thank you :thumb:

To families who volunteered and more who volunteer

I will get back to all you wonderful families after the weekend. Right now we are busy entertaining midshipmen and their dates. I also want to check out what is already in place. So, I have some emails out to several groups whom I have worked closely with on other things.

I think that there has not been enough info to the midshipmen about this area. Also, I think that there are many other families and alumni who would like to help but didn't know about this. The point is not to start something new or separate, it's to coordinate efforts, and get as many people involved as are interested. Anything we can do to help the cadets at sea is what we want. I appreciate all the info just written up about flying, that's great.

We have "Going to Sea" seminars twice a year for the midshipmen. We try to give them lots of info to make their time fun and easy. I would like to add the info just written about the flying, that would help them a lot.

I appreciate too that there are families hurting financially who can't just put a credit card down for things. Also, although apparently there are cadets who have had no trouble getting hotel rooms under the age of 21, our home is filled each year with midshipmen who could not get a room around the academy because they are underage. All of us are just trying to make the way smooth for the midshipmen. Thanks for your input and your interest. Keep your names coming and they will be passed on for our midshipmen to have a resource if needed.
