Know of Any Marine Reservists?

This wasnt getting any views on the off-topic thread, so I thought I'd try my luck here.
I'm trying to get in contact with a Marine Reservist (preferrably one in college right now) to answer some burning questions!

I spent a few months in the reserves after I got off active duty. My best friend is in the reserves. She spent 10 years on active duty and has been a reservist for about 3 years now to include 1 year deployed on an active reserve billet. If you post your questions I should be able to answer them or will ask my best bud.

How do I get military experience? I was told I could come to DEP workouts but I’ve also heard this isn’t true?
Do you recommend Naval Sea Cadets Corps even if I’d be joining at 16?
Are you less likely to get a civilian job knowing that the military will always be put over it?
What’s the competitiveness of SLCDA?
Workout goals to strive for?
Does it wear and tear down your body? Or make you feel better than ever?
 
I'll answer your last two.

Perfect PFT. (20 pullups, 100 crunches, 18 minute 3 mile run.)

It is what you make of it. If you dread it and lack motivation. It will wear and tear on you. If you find that motivation and realize the pros to it all then you'll feel better than ever.

bosoxnation33: I was not in the reserves and can't help with your exact questions but I suggest you might want to consult a Reserve unit in your area. Work the phones and find someone to help put you in touch with someone in the know. The Marine Corps Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy has been written up a few times here on the forum. I believe it is relatively new but there are some threads on it. It sounds awesome. http://www.mcrc.marines.mil/Portals/95/SLCDA/SLCDA14.pdf

Workout goals: Marines focus on a 3 mile run; pull-ups and crunches. You can find the male and female standards posted all over the internet. Strive to score as high as possible.
 
Yes you should be able to go overseas for a semester. I don't know about a full year but a semester I think you would be ok. Essentially you need to have a satisfactory year (called Sat years) for the time to count. This is factored by your number of drills. I think you should be able to make up a semesters worth of drill during the summer. This is something you will need to be open to, discuss with your unit, and be flexible for yes or no answers.

You should be able to do DEP and work out with other poolees while you wait for boot camp.

Reserves and jobs can be a mixed bag. Every where I have worked has been supportive of reserves. Same with most of my friends. I think it all matters how you handle it. It takes balance and work. If you make it an issue with your job or unit, it will be. Do your job and do them well at both places and there will be less questions or issues. A reserve unit close to home always is easier with travel time, etc. Remember a drill weekend essentially equals two straight weeks of work.

To max a female PFT its 21 minutes, 100 crunches and 70 second flex armed hang. Work on pull ups. The USMC will go to these soon for women. Work on them now. Work on correct form for pull ups and crunches.

Its all what you make of it and what you want out of it.

Hello, I am currently a Marine Reservist who also attends college full time. To answer a few of your questions, to be both a Marine as well as a college student is quite doable. My experiences in the Marines Corps has only benefited when it came to my academics. Not only have I learned to manage my time, but I also learned to better perform under stress. Drill is one weekend a month and you are also required to attend AT (Annual Training) for two weeks over the summer. As for civilian jobs, you have the same capability to get any job you so desire and are qualified for, your place of work under law cannot punish you and or deny you work due to your obligation to the military. As anything in life this is a WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT scenario. You are a Marine 24/7 and should conduct yourself as such, the word "Reservist" does not give you a reasoning to not be both physically and mentally ready for any task the Marine Corps needs you to accomplish. Physically, most Marines PT everyday, and I strongly recommend doing that as you should always maintain standards. As for Sea Cadets, I know a few guys who did this program prior to enlisting, anything that would or could benefit you as a person and or poolee I personally think you should do. Lastly you can attend DEP workouts and get a feel for where you stand physically, DEP workouts are not the Marine Corps; however, the poolee functions can give you a good idea of what is ahead. In my personal experience the Marine Corps was the best thing that has ever happened to me, I love what I do and I hope to continue my path in the Marine Corps with the dream of becoming and officer; hence why I am applying to the Academy.
