I feel something of a tenuous connection to this young man. My son was working as a freshman orientation leader this past summer at his college. As was his habit, he was going over the names of the people who would be in his group that day when he saw Kyle's name. He was pretty sure he recognized it, so got on Google to double check and sure enough, if it was THAT Kyle Carpenter, he was going to have one hell of a day.

DS arrived to the 'pick up point' early and Kyle was already there. It was quite easy at the time to visually confirm it was the same Kyle Carpenter. DS said, "Good morning corporal". "What? How did you know I was a corporal?". DS introduced himself, explained he was enrolled in NROTC MO, and they had some time to chat before others showed up. He and Kyle exchange hellos around campus and get together occasionally. I'm happy my son has gotten to know, even a little bit, such a fine young American. I've sort of kept tabs on him on TV and in the news ever since and was pleased to see this. He'll wear the medal with great dignity.

God Bless Kyle and your son. I am happy Kyle is now recognized for his actions.

I loved that story when you first related it, and I still do.

Congratulations to Kyle Carpenter on receiving this recognition of his heroism and sacrifice.
