What determines whether a cadet will go overseas for language immersion? Do they have to request it, or are they assigned? For how long does one go away? Are all expenses paid? How far in advance do you find out?

Hornet, didn't you go to Japan?

dont quote me on it, but i'm sure you have to apply for it. and you also need to have a pretty good gpa, grade in the class, etc...

Petko is completing a Spanish minor and is with a group of 12 cadets who left for Peru today. It sounds like it ought to be a great trip. They get back June 20th.

If my twin who takes Portuguese gets to go to Portugal, I want to go too! If he gets Brazil, I'm iffy. (Yeah, like he cares!)

Language immersion (Through the Academy int'l programs office and/or Olmstead foundation) usually requires to be in the language program, not on probation, and priority usually is given to GPA and class year.

Some programs are made by faculty, some programs are made by cadets submitting a proposed program for approval and funding. All trips are fully funded and cadets will have they meals paid for with some extra spending money as well.

There are other programs that are not language related like the JINSA program which sent me to Israel for 18 days last summer!

I also did go to Japan twice last year, summer for AF ops and spring break for an Olmstead funded immersion.

they would go to brazil or other places, they don't learn the portugal portuguese

Which program involves the semester long study abroad program? Also, do you need to be a foreign area studies major or could you go with a language minor? Thanks.

You don't have to have a FAS major to go overseas, I have a Bio major friend going to Japan for a semester. Other programs send people for a semester to China, France, Spain, Mexico, and Chile.

Just h:smile:eard from Petko yesterday...he's not having a good time, he is having a great time.
