Language Majors

Needs of the Navy AND the time required to obtain even a minimal mastery of those languages. To expand, the current view is that USN needs people who can speak Chinese and Arabic. Apparently, unlike "Romance" and other languages, Americans need a ton of education/training to achieve even a modicum of fluency. The only way to do this given all the other stuff you have to take at USNA is to have you major in it.

IOW, the "normal" 4-6 semesters of language that people learning French, German, etc. take aren't sufficient to even begin to learn Chinese or Arabic. Russian may take as long, but there is not the interest today in having people fluent in Russian as there was, say, 20 years ago.
