I liked the Guardian, but you should have heard the reaction to it in the Coast Guard, between the aviators and the cuttermen.
But the Guardian isn't that far off from the Alaska Ranger case (with the exception that the Coast Guard didn't lose anyone, the boat was much farther out at sea and many many more people were involved.) Actually, the Alaska Ranger case became a Popular Mechanics article, and eventually a book "Deadliest Sea".
There are things that don't happen usually, but the Guardian wasn't that far off from the reality of a rescue. And, incidentally, my old soccer coach was in the bonus features as a technical advisor during the production.
