I got a late start and USAFA probably won't receive everything until November 7th. Will it be too late for them to give an LOA by then? We find out our nomination status in December but that's not guaranteed we will be accepted into USAFA. I don't want to wait until March!

Well, considering the majority of applicants will find out in March or April, there's not much you can do about that. Even if you had everything finished today, there's no guarantees you'll know 100% if you receive or don't receive an appointment early.

When you say you don't WANT to wait til March, no one wants to wait. The question is, WILL you wait til March? Maybe you won't, and you'll look at other options. That's your choice. No one here is able to tell you what you will or won't hear by November or December. If you have to wait until March to find out, then I guess you'll wait. Or you won't.

Well of course I'm going to wait. This is my dream school! It would just be awesome to know if I was already in. Just like right now I don't want to be reading my Biology textbook but I'm doing it anyway so I will pass, haha.

OK, no more LOA talk unless you actually have one in your hand.

Angelic, it's not that I don't understand; I do!

It's just that... if you read the stickies (and my utter frustration with this LOA chatter from all SA's)... you know that the chances of you receiving an LOA are fairly slim. If you get one - well, good on you! If you don't, and you still manage a nom and then an appointment, well, good on you! No one will care on I-Day.

fencersmom is spot on. I'll admit it--after I applied, I was kind of banking on getting an LOA or EA appointment. I was a little disappointed when I didn't get either. Looking back on it, though, it doesn't matter...at all. If you mentally prepare yourself for a few more tough months of waiting, you will be less disappointed if you receive your appointment later (which most do).

Hang in there, Angelic - we all understand, and it will be worth the wait - consider it character building! Do have a plan B, but don't get discouraged if you have to wait until March- as I will be the first to admit I got discouraged numerous times! My DS took it all in stride, and yes, he did get a little frustrated with the wait, but was confident all along. Btw, DS had perfect SAT score, varsity sport, NHS president, orchestra, etc and we were feeling pretty confident to receive an LOA. He didnt hear until the last batch of appointments, on March 19th.

I didn't mean to make this a whole issue :/ I never meant to say I was betting on getting an LOA. I just wanted to know when they went out for USAFA. I don't care about being better than anyone else because of who got an LOA vs. who didn't. We all worked hard to get where we are and I would never put anyone down for that!

angelic, it's not that we disapprove of your desire, of your longing, of YOU... it's just that, at this time of year, that topic of LOAs is all over the place. Remember, most of the competition you'll face in getting a nom or appointment is formidable: 4.5 on a 4.0 scale, top athlete, excellent SAT, started own business, hundreds of volunteer hours... etc. The LOA is just so uncommon and so many young kids either think they deserve it or can't imagine that they won't get it.

Here's a case in point: My twins had almost identical scores in everything. GPA down to the thousandths of a point, finished at the nationals w/in 2 places of each other in three fencing categories, work, resumes equal... blah blah blah. One got an LOA, one did not. They both graduated USAFA in 2012 and are now both flying the airframe of their choice. Ironically, the one who did not receive the LOA finished with a very slightly higher GPA at USAFA, AND he's the one with his name on the wall at the Field house since he got a perfect PFT. Go figure.

Now, relax. Work on your plan B.
