I'm in the process of reapplying for Class of 2021. Currently, I'm finishing up my applications to nominating sources which require letters of recommendation. I was curious if anyone would have an idea of how much weight a letter of recommendation from a retired Chief Master Sergeant would hold? I absolutely admire this person but I've heard conflicting things about LORs from enlisted members.

Generally speaking, it is more advisable to find someone that knows you well and can speak from personal experience when they write your letter of recommendation, whether that letter is to your MOC for a nomination or especially if it is your (very important) LOR's to USAFA for your admissions. If that person happens to be a retired Chief Master Sergeant, then so be it. Our DS's letters came from a teacher, a factory worker and a youth pastor. They all 3 knew him very well and worked closely with him in different capacities. You could probably search the forum for some older threads on this topic to help you.

DD had a retired AF CMSgt write an LOR for the Academy as well as one of the MOCs. I have known and worked with him for 25 years, and she has known him most her life; they have been hunting together since she was about 10. She is a 2020 appointee. So, the most I can say is it didn't hurt her application.
