Sorry if this has been a previous topic. I read that a candidate was sending letters of recommendation to the USNA. I did not see anywhere that they requested letters of rec. Now, my MOC apps require three letters of rec. On a PM a mom said the letters were optional. How can they be optional? Do they want that information or not? Do they have time to read 51,000 letters from applicants? Don't want to short my app either if they might help. ??
    Please advise.

I read that you have to get the 3 letters. One from an English teacher, One from a math teacher and one from someone who knows you really well. That info came from a book printed by the Academy and shared with me by the guidance counselor at his school.

Once you open a candidate file, you have to provide an email address of your current Math and English teacher and the Navy will send them an email as to what they need. That is the only rec letters they ask for. But they do say that if you have someone that can bring something great to your table, something that they have not heard then you can send that to the academy to add to your file.

Correct. However, as the OP noted, USNA has to read literally thousands of "required" letters of rec. So, if you're planning to send additional ones, be sure that they add something to your packet. A letter that covers somthing not otherwise apparent could help; one that merely reiterates what others have said isn't going to do anything for you.

Son didn't send in any optional/additional letters of rec for USNA, he is now a mid. (I don't even remember seeing the option to send them in on USNA's app or website like I do for USAFA) So heed the advice given above, unless an additional letter can shine a light on some huge accomplished previously unmentioned in your application, there is no need to send one in.

My DS, currently a plebe at USNA, received advise from an ALO to send copies of his recommendations that were sent to his MOC's to the academies. He requested copies from those sources and forwarded them on. He received appointments to USNA, USMA and USAFA. I would only send letters that you feel confident will show you in a very positive light. I am not sure how much this assisted my son, but it could be the thing that puts you over the next guy all things being equal.
