LGBT Citadel

Woah, NavyHoops, I was the one that said the schools conservative-ism had nothing to do with the cheerleaders? I think you were intending that for Conan

Whoops, I did not mean for that comment to get out of hand. My apologies if I sounded like I was slandering republicans. I recently found out that it was a mostly republican based school, even though I had read the word "conservative" at least a thousand of times on the website, so it was ignorance on my part. It really does not affect my final decision as I share beliefs across the entire politic spectrum and do not identify with just one group.

Note to self: Don't discuss politics.

Update: I did find out that they do have a spirit squad known as "Club Spike".

All comments were appreciated, Thanks guys.

Citadel Cheerleaders - and why vanished

Just my two cents - right now there seems to be lack of interest in cheer squad and the AD leadership is not really very supportive and cutting costs - its a public college but funding by the state is really very small. Add to this there is a gulf issue going on between the Corps and the Corp Squad - athletes. Plus the football team and basketball teams are not winning. Add all this up and maybe this is a reason. One factor that may turn this around a bit is that the Corps of Cadets will be moving from the visitor side of the stadium back to the home side for the 2014 Football season. They were moved when the stadium was refurbished and seasons ticket holders were buying home side seat licenses. After a mighty effort by Alumni - this is changing and the Corps will be where they belong - which should increase spirit. Regards

Don't flaunt your sexuality and you'll be fine, stay away from flamboyants and overt gays, remember this is South Carolina and a majority of the students are from there, it's the bible-belt regardless of what the official word is. Overall if you want a really accepting academy I would think Norwich would be your best bet. However from talking to friends of who have also attended and still do attend Senior and Federal Military colleges it is seen as a laughing stock due to the overt gay pride. Just my input and advice.

Not to highjack the thread any further, but can you explain what you mean between a gulf between athletes and non-athletes in the corps? Are varsity athletes not supported by the rest of the corps? Is that true just at The Citadel or would you say it also goes on at VMI too?

its a problem at VMI and the FSAs as well; there is resentment because of the perception that athletes get out of too many military obligations like formations, drill, parades and inspections but conveniently overlooked is the fact that they pay a price in lack of free time due to practices, workouts and other obligations, at The Citadel all football players including new recruits spend their summers on campus taking summer school courses and attending workouts. Of course winning teams quickly tend to make the rank and file forget their hangups.

That's definitely something for ds to ask cadets about when he visits. Thanks.

Norwich is a "laughing stock" among other SMCs?

However, that is not to say it's a bad school at all, most military schools are great, it's just not seen as "normal" or optimal as compared to other military schools due to things such as their "condom olympics" and "gay pride week" things that do not exactly boost their standing in the military standing.. That is why they are looked at as a laughing stock.

You've got to be kidding me, seems to me that the issue is more with those doing the laughing.

That was my vague reaction, too. School pride is one thing, but I'd really rather not pay $$ in tuition to an institution with a culture that demeans its brothers (and sisters) in arms, if I can avoid it. Surely the majority of SMC students are more respectful of other cadets?

Just like 170 other pre-knobs I've just visited the citadel and the experience is constantly running through my head, so I decided I'd share my experience with you guys.

The Citadel is amazing. I almost did not go to the overnight visit, but I'm glad I did. If I didn't, I would have no idea what I was walking into or the things I would have to endure. Even after gathering as much knowledge as I could I learned one thing: This is for me.

I was put into Hotel company. I would love to tell the names of my knob host and all the cool knobs I've met, but I feel it wouldn't be right to release their names (I've saved their names in my phone. I don't want to ever forget them whether they remember me or not they have made an impact on my life in less than 24 hours I've known them) . Hotel company seems like a perfect fit for me. It might be a stretch, but I'll talk to someone and see if I can get a letter of recommendation from someone I know - since I don't have a legacy (yet).

There are a lot of racist jokes, nazi jokes, jewish jokes, gay jokes, but at the end of the day you have to remember that they are just jokes (much like a locker room environment).

Upperclassmen will mess with you. So I'll be prepared.

Many people wanted to know if I had a girlfriend (to which I said no) and many told me the difficulties of having a relationship while in the Corps of Cadets. No one had a clue I was gay (not that I was surprised). I realized that being gay is not who I am, it's simply a smaller part of a whole. So I got to see first hand (even though you guys already told me) that being gay has little impact overall.

I also learned a few tricks and secrets, but I won't tell those either

Long story short: The citadel is amazing. Everyone thinks I'm crazy for wanting to go so badly and maybe I am. I know mind, body, and soul that there is nothing that will stop me from going to the citadel and being the best I can be. Failure is not an option.

PS: Thank you guys for answering my questions and helping influence my college decision with your knowledge. By the way, the whole republican thing is not even a factor. I jumped the gun when I brought that up earlier. Sorry :shake:

Glad you've found your place, and good luck to you!

I'm glad I found this. I was looking up some stuff about the citadel and the LBGT community. I'm gay, but I'm not out yet, and I've been planning to come to the Citadel (I'll matriculate this fall). Recently, I've been stressed out because I figured that I would be alone in the core. Seeing your post actually makes me feel a whole lot better. It's good to know that I won't be completely alone when I go. Are you planning on doing CSI?

It's "corps", not "core".

If I were you, I wouldn't come out, at leastnot during knob year. As a knob, nobody really cares about your personal issues. You'll just be a knob. The best thing to do is keep your head down, do what you are told, when you are told and don't draw attention to yourself.

Well, I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do about coming out yet (in general), but I know that I definitely will not be truing to gain attention or doing anything excess that gains attention. I know that I've got to keep my head down.

Glad you feel better. :thumb:

Yup I plan on going to the first session of CSI. A lot of knobs have not recommended CSI (I think the price was higher last year), but I'm going because it'll be an easy way to take care of some basic courses and meet more people.

Glad to hear you found your place at the citadel and hope it works out for you. Whether you go into the corps of cadets or decide to be in their civilian program, I would agree with the previous comment in recommending not being totally open your first year--it's just easier that way and its not really anyone else's business... in the end it's your call--good luck.
