please do me a huge favor and anyone and everyone that reads these boards be praying for the class of 2010 right now. if you know anyone in the senior class, send them an e-mail, a text, whatever to encourage them. we're now 5 days from license and the pressure is building up. we need all the support and encouragement we can get.
    thanks,
    Is

I've got you covered on that one Is2day. I also have a rabbits foot, a lucky coin and I just killed a chicken! Of course, I have a vested interest in this and so my motives are self serving to some extent. Tell that DS of mine that under no circumstances is he to throw my credit card into the Amphitrite pool. A few coins should suffice. As for you, keep dodging those paper balls and good luck.:thumb:

Two of our Dinghy Sailors who will be sailing in the National Championship Regatta next week are one step ahead, having spent this week taking their license exams at the USCG REC at the Battery in New York City- they are 6 for 6 so far, and have the last test this morning, and should shortly be the first licensed members of the class of 2010. Looking forward to some early bell ringing this afternoon!

Congratulations and I also want to thank you for posting the link - no matter how many times I see someone ring the bell after ail these years I still get that same great feeling seeing someone do it as I got 28 years ago when a younger fitter me got to do it.

Here's hoping Jake and Casey tear up the course in Wisconsin as well.

    Go Mariners!

I got chills watching it. I remember my turn like it was yesterday. There is no way to describe the feeling to someone who hasn't experienced it.

And a special prayer for you, Is, because of your selfless, giving spirit in helping all of us here on this forum in so many ways. I am praying for wisdom and serenity for you as you sit for your exams. I can hardly wait to see you ring that bell!

Hope everyone is doing well. You can almost see the finish line and hear the bell. How did the bell ringing tradition start?

Wishing c/o 2010 all the best!!!

I believe it alludes to the maritime tradition of ringing "eight bells" to signal the end of a watch and the beginning of a new watch. At sea most watches are 4 hours long with a bell rung for each half hour. Of course our mids tend to get a little carried away but then, they have earned it. Last year one did actually ring the bell eight times in strict nautical tradition. To the best of my knowledge this tradition dates back to the earliest days of the academy.

...and sometimes they ring a special "code".

You can watch the bell ringing live beginning at 1500 by following the link found here: http://www.usmma.edu/

I hope not to see any baseball bats, large ping hammers, Braveheart kilts, Sponge Bob costumes, banana man or toga guys this year. And maybe I lie.

Can't wait to hear the bell ringing for all the first classmen who have worked hard over the last 4 (and sometimes more) years. Was always great to see the FWE (finished with engines) signs up on the doors (of course written on radar plotting sheets, oh the irony :) )

Enjoy the moment, you earned it.
