This is kinda dumb, but I can't find an answer anywhere.

Do the midshipmen do their own laundry or is there a service that does it for which they are charged?

If they do their own, is it in quarter machines, like most colleges, or do they use some sort of a debit card.

When do they have time to do it?

What about drycleaning?

Assuming things haven't changed.....

There is a laundry service. On your designated day, you put your laundry bag (containing your laundry sorted into whites, dry-clean, black socks, women's personal bag (if applicable), and everything else. The bag is picked up, the laundry done, and delivered (usually two days later) back nto the company area where the plebes have the enjoyable task of distributing it to the owners.

There used to be a laundry downstairs where upperclass could do their own laundry, and it was usually used for doing whatever civilian clothes they had or could do at their sponsor's house.

Someone should be along soon to verify if this is all still the case....

Of course, I always took my CLEAN clothes home for the holidays (I lived w/in driving distance). When my mother washed them (which earned her a special place in heaven), the black literally poured out. So, you get what you pay for, but when there are no other options. . . .

Also, for women out there, the process is not designed for women's undergarments as USNA has no "delicate" feature on their machines. Thus, stuff gets trashed much more quickly than at home. Not much you can do about it, however.:frown:

There are laundry facilities in Bancroft, along with the laundry service. So mids can do their own laundry, plus company laundry on whatever day laundry day is.

Yes .. but plebes, for the most part, CAN't do their own laundry. My son says the laundry people pretty much boil everything ... it goes out it a bag and comes back in the same bag ... a tangled mess ... he's seriously looking forward to doing his own laundry ... (HA!)

All true but you do pay for the laundry service and you can't opt out of it, it's deducted with all the other random charges automatically. I think it used to be like $60/month.

The basement machines were quarter operated, they always talked about making them free but at the same time would raise the prices on us. So, I don't know what the current state of those is.

During Plebe Summer, Plebes have zero options. They send out their "boil in" bags and get back grey, often ruined, uniforms. Items get lost.

Whenever I went to visit during Plebe Ac year, my Mid made it a point to do her laundry off the Yard, even though the service was available. Also, sponsor parents will often allow Plebes to do laundry at their homes.

Basement machines are still coin operated.
