LOAs?

Just to give some variance on how the LOA seems to work (we're new to this too), my son attended all 3 summer seminars with 2 other boys from different states. Obviously with different strengths. My son was working on completing his packet in mid July for USNA. He was having trouble with one form his principal was not completing correctly online. The principal finally got that form in on July 21. A couple hours later my son was called by his regional director and they had a long conversation. Again, a couple hours later, he received an email telling him to contact them about a change in his status. He called, and was told he was being offered an LOA.

However, in the past month and a half, he hasn't received anything "official" in the mail. Not an actual letter. But his B&G officer contacted him and told him he'd received a notice of it. He's gotten an email telling him about it. And when he contacted his congressman's office asking if he should submit his packet or wait for the LOA, they told him they already had the copy of the LOA. So I know it's real, but my point is if you're just waiting by the mailbox (like he did for the next few weeks after they told him about it  ), it may not be the right course.

Incidentally, going back to my summer seminar point. Both other boys he went to the seminars with received LOA's from West Point, very shortly after he was notified about his Navy one. He never received any communication from them. Out of the 3 boys, only one (not my son) was a recruited athlete. From what I understand from his conversations (okay, texts) from them, they first received an email telling them if everything was correct that they had submitted so far, THEN they'd be offered an LOA. Neither of the boys had begun, let alone completed, their USMA application at that time (it wasn't open yet), other than what was in for summer seminar. On the flip side, obviously my son's from USNA was held until he got that last form in, so it seemed as though the packet had to be completed. Finally, none of them have gotten anything from USAFA yet, although they have all completed their applications there.

Good luck to everyone! Not trying to divert the thread here, just offer a different experience!

All 3? As in, there are only three and he went to all of them?

(pssst - there are 4 summer sessions at 4 different US service academies, not 3) :thumb:

Okay, I know you're joking, but why 4 instead of 5? I don't know much beyond what I consider the "Big 3" (yes, I grew up in Detroit, can you tell? ). I know CG offers a summer seminar as well, but isn't MMA also considered a US Service Academy?

Foundation Students?

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of Foundation Scholarship students who are currently doing their year at prep school receiving LOA's?

My son received an LOA for the Class of 2014 today. It is not a certificate, but an official letter, similar to what others have described. It is a huge psychological boost, but we are not doing the "happy dance" just yet, as he has yet to hear any news on a vision waiver, and of course the nomination process still lies ahead - It is interesting that at the very end of the LOA it states that copies have been sent to his MOC and State Senators, so I guess they will already know about it when he goes for his interviews.

One of my sons (I have twins) got his LOA just a few days before he had his first interview with the office of one of the senators. They did not know he had an LOA at that time. Once he mentioned it to them - the only question they had was, "If you receive a nomination from this office for the U.S. Naval Academy - do you plan on attending?" His answer was "Yes," and that was basically the end of the interview.

Don't be shy about mentioning it if it seems they do not know. But do it in a humble manner.

Faithful Mom: CONGRATULATIONS to your son!

We are hearing different advice regarding letting the MOCs know about LoAs. My son was notified of his USNA LoA a couple of weeks ago. He asked admissions what he should do about notifying the MOCs. Admissions recommended he not notify the MOCs, and to let his record speak for itself. His BGO is advising him to say something. However, we noticed when the letter arrived it showed that the letter had been cc'd to the MOCs. (Interestingly, his LoA from USMA shows it was cc'd only to his MALO).

They'll get a copy of it - that's for sure. They will eventually know.

Mostly my comments were intended for the MOC interviews. If they do not seem aware that you have an LoA at the time of the interview, I would try to casually (and humbly) work that it into the conversation. There is certainly a way of doing that without gloating.

All I can say is that we made sure that the MOCs knew about the LOAs and both my sons are currently in the Class of 2013 ... so, obviously, it didn't hurt.

Just wanted to share that my son got his official letter today as well, after being told about it nearly 2 months ago! He was definitely happy about actually having the hard copy!
