I just received my LOE yesterday from USMA. I was wondering what it exactly means? What is the difference between an LOE and LOA and does it help you in anyway?

An LOE just encourages you to complete your application because they think you're competitive. An LOA is an assurance you will receive an appointment provided you complete the things in the LOA, including receipt of a nomination.

Well it sounds like the answer is yes, because you got an LOE.

Another thing that a LOE does (and the main reason it was created) is allow an overnight visit.
When the decision was made to reduce the number of LOAs given, WP still needed something that would offer competitive candidates an overnight visit. That is when the LOE was born.

Can USMA look at my application without my medical exam in?
Yes, your application needs to complete before they will send you to DoDMERB.
Also, at a parents' session at SLE drop-off this summer, the admissions representative told us that they are looking for 3 key items before they will look at your application: transcripts, test scores & essays.

Actually - you can be scheduled for the DoDMERB exam without a complete file. A certain portion needs to be complete but not all.

If you received an LOE and are serious about attending, I recommend doing an overnight visit as early as possible. You will get a feel for what cadet life is and more importantly you should have an opportunity to meet with someone from admissions where you can further reinforce your interest and you could pick up some tips on where you might need to tune up your application. Your visit also demonstrates to your MOC that you are interested and their nomination would be appreciated and not go to waste.

I just got an LOA today from West Point (it says letter of assurance).
