Logging in packing list questions

Ok, now I'm really confused. White or black compression shorts for guys?

I've also got a question about haircuts. I understood that every guy got 'buzzed', no matter what kind of haircut they showed up with, and actually it went badly for guys who arrived with short-short hair (as if trying to avoid the haircut).

What's the scoop?

Just show up with a decent, conservative, haircut. They're going to shave it off anyway so there's no need to get it cut too short. The logging in instructions will be pretty explicit regarding what to wear. Just don't show up on "I" day in a miniskirt and high heels (especially if you are a guy!):shake:

We ordered the Blue/White New Balance 1063 on 5/12 and they arrived at the door this afternon 5/15! We didn't pay for express shipping or shipping for that matter. We used Road Runner Sports. They're getting broken in as I type.

LOL @ KPmarineops :):) Indeed don't show up in heels and a mini skirt. There actually was a female who did this last year.

Yes, show up with a neat, conservative haircut. For the females i would recommend putting your hair up the way you intend to wear it during indoc, and word to the wise for the gals...the shorter you can cut your hair before you arrive the better. You will barely have any time in the mornings to mess with your hair, so a "wash and go" style would be a good one, if you can bare to cut your hair shorter than normal.

Yes, I remember seeing her last year. Those high heel sandals looked awfully funny when they made all of the candidates put on their white sport socks.

On the issue of hair for females - just because the regs changed and you don't have to cut doesn't mean it wouldn't be a good idea to cut it. Shorter is better. Two minute showers don't allow much time for shampooing. You won't have time to take care of it. Our daughter got her hair cut VERY short. While growing it out has been a bit of a nuisance, she is certain she made the right choice. Remember - hair grows back.

But if you want to draw the attention of every female DI and cadre member (not to mention any upperclass female once the academic year starts) go ahead and leave your hair long. I'm pretty certain you'll get some special treatment.

I finally decided to call the Commandant's office today to ask about the compression shorts color for males.

They can be any color but preferably white.

I've been thinking about what our daughter took with her and what she had mailed immediately after indoc. That first box was a biggie. But I'm pretty sure she carried Tide-to-Go (not bleach) pens with her. They are small enough to carry. She may have carried only one and had the others mailed. But those are a lifesaver. If you take these, be prepared to be popular. Hers were borrowed so much that she went through 3 of them by Parents Weekend.

Girls will want perfumed toiletries and body spray. You will get hot, sweaty and smelly. My daughter doesn't normally use perfume or scented toiletries. She was begging us to send her some and, of course, by the time we got the letter or phone call and then mailed the box, Indoc was over. There is a small selection available at the NEX, but it is limited.

Duct tape! Definitely include this in the first box. Our daughter also found spray starch useful. Learn how to iron before you go. If possible, learn how to use a needle and thread for something basic like sewing on a button.

As noted in the Plebe Parent tips that were posted, bring a small amount of cash. The advice last year was to send them with a roll of quarters so they could provide change for upperclassmen.

For a bag, our daughter took a plain, black duffle bag with a shoulder strap. She was issued a sea bag with her uniforms.

As mentioned in another thread, the pre-Indoc sports team BBQs are wonderful. Our daughter attended the cross-country/track one. She had a nice chat with the coach and got to meet some of the other candidates. The cross-country team was a real life-saver for her. I suggest that every plebe join either a sports team or another club or organization where you can get off campus and actually get to be almost a human being instead of a plebe.

Good luck to all of the incoming Candidates and to your families! It is hard to believe that it has been almost a year for us. Of course, there are times when it seems like it must have been a lot longer than that.

Welcome to the KP family!

Sleeping bag question

We have heard that a lot of midshipmen do not sleep in their beds but on their beds in sleeping bags. Is it wise to take a sleeping bag to Indoc or is this something that should be shipped after Indoc?

No sleeping bag at indoc. They are not allowed. None of the Mids sleep in their beds, or at least under their covers. They all sleep on top of their beds so they stay made. It's not as bad as it sounds, but I can tell you my son loves to actually sleep in his bed, under covers when he's home :)

Actually someone at KP started a Facebook group "my sheets are duct taped / shirtstayed to my mattress I sleep on top." There are some pretty impressive photos of some well made "racks."

Sleeping bag question

So do most parents ship a sleeping bag after Indoc or just take it to them at Parents Weekend?

The parent's tip sheet suggests a fan. Son will likely be in Band company, so he will not be in an air conditioned hall - what type of fan do you suggest?

My parents shipped my sleeping bag just after Indoc ended. Even if it's warm out you will still use the thing to sleep on top of with the sheet as a cover.

As to the fan: many options. Some in the past have used the box fan which will fit in the window, I just had one of those small (maybe 5-6" across) fans that I could put up on the bed and move around if I needed it. I eventually got a "vornado"

That thing was awesome.

my son is in 2nd co, without ac. I sent him to indoc with a little, itty bitty fan, and another mid from 3rd co felt sorry for him and gave him his good box fan. Last year I bought him one of the vornado fans and he also got one of the double window fans as well. Seems to work pretty well for him.

Packing for INDOC

Is it advisable to label all of their personal belongings that are being taken to INDOC? I noticed in some of last years INDOC photos plebe candidates sitting on the floor labeling their academy issued shirts. Just wondering if things like towels, underwear and the few personal items they have been told to report with should be labeled with their name and class??? It would make sense to me to do it now but don't want it to be a source of negative attention for being over prepared.

Keep it simple

Just show up with whats on the list. No more or no less. Follow directions and you will be fine. Don't do anything to draw attention to yourself. KP is not summer camp.

You can label them if you want; however, they will still relabel them once there. There is a "specific" way of labeling things which includes your company number so can't really complete that without being there. Technically they can check the stenciling during inspections and if not done the "correct" way you can get points off.
