Would having a Navy Seal write me a letter of recommendation make an impact on my application? There is a SEAL that comes to our school occasionally and talks to our sports teams. He said that if anybody was interested in joining the military, that he could help us out. Was just wondering if this would be a big deal or not.

Only if he knows you really well and it would add to your actual Naval Academy application. The Naval Academy only requires the recommendation from a math and English teacher (online). Any additional letters of recommendation may be warranted if they add something unique/distinct about other activities and experiences you've been involved in. This implies more than occasional relationship with the one recommending.

Simply having a 'Navy SEAL' write a letter for you will not have an impact on your application. You want someone who actually knows you and can attest to your own achievements, rather than try to use their own achievements as some sort of arguing point for you. If you personally know him and he has witnessed you in action and can attest to your character and ability, go for it. If not, it wouldn't do much.

Short answer based on the OP: No.

Yes, Navy SEALs are special. But a letter from one (assuming he knows you really well) won't be any more effective (and probably less so) than a strong teacher rec.

Okay thank you everybody for the responses, I appreciate it. I do not know him very well, however I have met him a couple of times and have had a few good conversations with him, and he has seen me play hockey and lacrosse as well (he's a good friend of one of our coaches). Was just wondering what this would do to my app. Thanks to all who helped.

    LOR from Navy SEAL

Having this officer write you a LOR to USNA as part of your admissions package really wont help and I would not encourage it if he can't add anything significant that is not already in your application. However, if you need a third LOR for a Congressional Nomination and this officer can discuss the traits he sees in you that are indicative of a good officer, based upon his military experience and his getting to know you a bit, would not be a bad idea. It would probably be better than getting a LOR from another adult that simply says "Johnny is a great young man. You should select him."

We don't even know if this Navy SEAL is an officer. The OP didn't say. The vast majority of Navy SEALS are enlisted.
