My DS (Does this mean daughter, son?) has been advised by one of his best friends, who is a 3rd year at West Point, to buy Bates low quarters now and start breaking them in. Godd idea? Y/N; if so are these the correct shoes?

DS is Dear Son and DD is Dear Daughter. My DS has friends in each of the other 4 service academies. What is good advice at one does not exactly apply to another. One of my DS's best friends is a 2C at West Point. They meet in the city and hang out together from time to time. As a side note, they are both convinced that Kings Point is more difficult in most ways. Regarding shoes, you will be advised in your logging in package what to buy/bring. It will include tennis shoes, but not dress shoes. Your PC will be issued his/her dress shoes. If he/she brings a pair from home, they will be confiscated during Indoc. Some mids do have a second pair while at KP, one for everyday wear and one used only for inspections. It would be easier to send the second pair after Indoc or deliver them in person at Parents' weekend.

Thank you very much. I also found the acronym list for future reference.

My personal preference when it came to shoes were leathers even after we earned the privelege of coroframs. I found them much more comfortable and cooler on the feet. As an upperclassman I always asked for leathers over frams for future shoe issues. Once you get a good base shine on the leather shoes it only takes a couple minutes a day to keep it looking good. Once a fram shoe gets scratched you really cant do anything with it and you either get new shoes or walk around looking like a bum.

Also, you cant have enough sweat socks. I always wore a pair underneath my black polyester socks ... its much better on the feet and the air quality.

My advice is to not bother with purchasing a pair of uniform shoes.

You will be issued plenty and have plenty of time to get that "first shine" done.

Agreed on the shoes. I don't recall ever getting any 'frams, even with the option to. I know far more about shining shoes and polishing belt buckles than I ever thought I would.
