Maersk Alabama Hijacked by Pirates

A single 25mm bushmaster on a ship would solve the problem quite nicely, IMO.

I really don't understand the companies who refuse to arm their ships for fear of escalating the violence. The other guys are using RPGs! It escalated already, dumbo!

I'm in favor of a heavy response. Kill off a couple hijacking parties, and the others will get the message.

It's also important to remember SEALS aren't our only teams, nor are they always the best pick for this kind of operation. I like SEALs but there are teams better suited for this kind of stuff.

I agree completely that there are many other elite units worthy of respect and who could pull it off. In this particular case, however, I think the SEALs are best-suited.

If the hostages were being held ashore, then it would most likely be Delta.

Regardless, the points mentioned above, that we can't be the world's police, that we don't seem to have the guts to do anything anyway, and the rest, remain true.

Prayers go out for the hostages and their families. What a nightmare that must be. :frown:

I agree these families are living in a horrible nightmare. Will Maersk pay the ransom or will the military use force? Either way I hope it is resolved quickly

A lot of it has to do with laws in the countries where the ships moor. Everyone in the world seems to think that the firearm is the embodyment of all evil in the known universe, and that therefore only the police, the military, political security details, and Hollywood bodyguards should have them.

The fact that the police, the military, political security details, and Hollywood bodyguards cannot protect 99.999999% of the population of the world 24 hours a day is a minor detail they choose to ignore in the name of "public safety", with predictable results.

So the upshot is that ships sail with NO weapons aboard because doing so would violate the law of whatever stupid countries they are visiting. If they DO have a weapon or two, they are completely inadequate to face the threat.

Yeah, a Bushmaster would certainly ruin their day. :thumb:

Google MSRT.

"Malicious Software Removal Tool"

So we're going to threaten them with the next release of Microsoft Windows? :yllol:

Just kidding. Let me keep looking. Not heard of them before, but it's been a LONG time since I followed any of this closely...

ETA: Ah! Interesting! Maritime Security Response Team.

So the Swabbies are getting into the special-operations racket, eh? Good for them!

I don't care who does the job so long as they can shoot straight, shoot first, and when they're done there's lots of fresh pirate-meat to feed the sharks with.

HAHAHA....I know, I edited it to "Google USCG MSRT".

The MSRT is sometimes confused with an MSST, but they are not the same.

Like I said, they looked good, they deployed good tactics and had smooth transitions at each obstacle or challenge they faced.

I should have gone Marine Corps. :bang:

I don't know guys.

Puddle Pirates after real Pirates? Isn't that a conflict of interest?

Everybody's getting into the SpecOp business. My son received a brochure from MarSoc and he hasn't even gone to Junior's PLC yet! Recruiters are strange beings!

Check "guardianspies.com", this is not a new thing for the Coast Guard...although the MSRT is fairly new and little known.

Also, unlike the Navy, the Coast Guard has the legal authority to make an arrest and enforce Treaties (no I'm not saying that means the Navy could not act).

Pirate on Pirate action, seems completely appropriate.

Fox is reporting that the crew took control of the ship....that would be interesting if it's true. Certainly would deserve a good homecoming if they took it back over!

THAT CREW ROCKS!!!!!!! THEY HAVE THE SHIP BACK!!!!

Hope those pirates can't swim!!!!! WAHOOOOOO!!!!!

LOL LITS, our posts keep crossing paths. GOD, I'm absolutely EUPHORIC!

Shane Murphy, the 2nd mate on the ship called his Dad & confirmed that they do indeed have the ship back. One pirate tied up & the other three in the water. They just showed Murphy's photo on FOX & he's in whites so I'm wondering if he's a KP2er as well as the Captain.

Can't wait to hear more details! YEHAAAWWWW! What cowboys!!!

Murphy's dad teaches at Mass Maritime, and he (Shane) is a graduate of Mass Maritime (2001) as well.

I just visited Mass Maritime last week.

Make this into a movie, at least on TV. Should be some interesting stories. Nice that the first U.S. flagged vessel fought back!!!

So why didn't you

I had a very different mindset back then. You know the old saying: "Too soon old. Too late smart."

I don't regret going Navy, I just think USMC would have been more fun in a lot of ways.

Oh, well...

ETA: They took the ship back? COOL!

Throw them over the stern then order up All Back Full.
